Renowned Indian space scientist Dr. E.V. Chitnis passed away at the age of 100 on Wednesday morning at his residence in Pune, following a heart attack. Dr. Chitnis, a pioneer of India’s early space programme, played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s space exploration efforts. Born on July 25, 1925, he was among the first generation of Indian scientists who worked closely with Vikram Sarabhai, laying the foundation of what is today the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His passing marks the end of an era for Indian space science, but his legacy in the Indian space programme will continue to inspire generations.
Dr. Chitnis was instrumental in selecting Thumba, Kerala, as the site for India’s first rocket launch, recognizing its strategic equatorial advantage in the early 1960s. As a key figure in the evolution of INCOSPAR into ISRO, he helped establish critical programmes like the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT), enabling rural India to access television and telecommunication services. His contributions to remote sensing, space-based communication, and policy frameworks cemented his role as a cornerstone of India’s space programme, shaping the country’s scientific trajectory for decades.
From 1981 to 1985, Dr. Chitnis served as the second director of ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of satellite applications for communication, meteorology, and education. Recognized nationally for his invaluable contributions, Dr. Chitnis was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1985, a testament to his enduring impact on India’s space programme and scientific excellence. He also played a crucial role in mentoring future leaders, including reviewing A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s résumé in 1962, recommending him for NASA training, which shaped India’s aerospace journey.
Even after retirement in 1989, Dr. Chitnis remained an active figure in academia and science communication. Settling in Pune, he helped establish the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC) at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SSPU) and worked for over two decades to enhance science education through media and communication. His dedication to the Indian space programme and educational outreach inspired countless students and researchers, highlighting his belief that the benefits of space technology should reach every corner of the nation.
Earlier this year, Dr. Chitnis celebrated his 100th birthday with a centenary conference hosted by IISER Pune and the National Centre for Science Communicators (NCSC), Mumbai. The event celebrated his contributions to science, space policy, and innovation, bringing together senior ISRO scientists and young researchers. Astrophysicist Ajit Kembhavi noted that Dr. Chitnis had an exceptional ability to identify and nurture talent, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to influence the Indian space programme today.
Dr. Chitnis also contributed to science journalism, serving as president of the Press Trust of India for nearly three decades, strengthening public awareness and communication of science in India. His son, Chetan Eknath Chitnis, a leading molecular biologist and Padma Shri awardee in 2023, continues his father’s legacy in scientific excellence. Dr. Chitnis leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the Indian space programme, inspiring current and future generations of scientists to explore, innovate, and expand India’s presence in space.
