India’s four bright young science students have returned home from Dubai after winning big at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2025. The prestigious competition was held from July 5 to July 14 and saw participation from 354 students representing 90 countries and five observer nations. India made its 26th appearance this year and finished with an impressive medal haul — two golds and two silvers — placing sixth overall in the medal rankings.
About this proud achievement — from who the winners were, how they were selected, their training journey, and India’s overall performance at this global science event.

Meet The Medal Winners
The Indian team of four students made the country proud by winning medals in all four positions. Here’s who brought home the honors:
Gold Medalists:
Devesh Pankaj Bhaiya from Jalgaon, Maharashtra
Sandeep Kuchi from Hyderabad, Telangana
Silver Medalists:
Debadatta Priyadarshi from Bhubaneswar, Odisha
Ujjwal Kesari from New Delhi
Their amazing performances helped India rank sixth in the world, alongside nations like Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Israel.
How Were The Students Selected?
Getting selected to represent India at an international competition is not easy. The selection process is long and challenging, ensuring that only the best and most dedicated students make it to the team.
India’s selection for the Chemistry Olympiad is handled by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), located in Mumbai. HBCSE operates under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). This organization acts as the national body responsible for conducting science Olympiads.
Here’s how the selection process works:
National Olympiad Examinations: Students from across India take part in written tests. These tests are tough and test a student’s deep knowledge of chemistry.
Training Camps: The top performers are invited to attend advanced training camps.
Final Team Selection: Based on performance during training and further tests, the top four students are selected to represent India.
What Kind Of Training Did They Undergo?
Before leaving for Dubai, the Indian team underwent an intensive training program at HBCSE. This training included both theoretical sessions and laboratory work. They had to prepare for everything — from solving complex chemical problems to performing detailed lab experiments.
Their training was guided by some of India’s top chemistry mentors:
Professor Ankush Gupta – Head Mentor, HBCSE
Professor Seema Gupta – Acharya Narendra Dev College, Delhi
Dr. Neeraja Dashaputre – IISER Pune
Dr. Amrit Mitra – Government General Degree College, Singur
This experienced team helped shape the students’ understanding, sharpen their problem-solving skills, and boost their confidence before the competition.
What Is The International Chemistry Olympiad?
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is a global event where top school students compete in solving complex chemistry problems. The competition includes:
Theory Exam – Students solve challenging questions in physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry.
Practical Exam – They conduct experiments and analyze data in a lab setting.
This year, the IChO was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and lasted for ten days, from July 5 to July 14. A total of 354 students participated from 90 countries and five observer nations.
India’s History at IChO
India has been participating in the International Chemistry Olympiad since 1999. Over the years, Indian students have shown consistent improvement in both the number and quality of medals won.
Here’s a summary of India’s achievements so far:
Overall Medal Record:
30% Gold Medals
53% Silver Medals
17% Bronze Medals
Last 10 Editions:
Gold Medal Wins Increased to 38%
Silver Medals at 58%
This steady improvement shows how Indian students are getting stronger in science, year after year.
Who Supports These Students?
Behind these successful students is a strong support system that includes teachers, scientists, mentors, and government organizations.
The National Steering Committee on Science Olympiads helps plan and manage India’s participation in international competitions. The committee is supported by several government departments:
Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
Department of Science and Technology (DST)
Department of Space (DOS)
Ministry of Education (MoE)
These departments provide the necessary funding, resources, and guidance so that young Indian minds can shine on the global stage.
Why This Achievement Matters
This year’s results not only add medals to India’s record but also highlight something more important — the power of early support and training. When talented students are given the right environment, resources, and encouragement, they can compete and win against the best in the world.
It also proves that India is becoming a strong name in pre-university science education. Many of these students go on to become future scientists, researchers, and leaders in the world of science and technology.
The success of India’s team at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad is more than just a medal count. It’s a story of hard work, smart guidance, national support, and youthful determination. With young minds like Devesh, Sandeep, Debadatta, and Ujjwal leading the way, the future of Indian science looks bright.
Let us celebrate their success and continue to support young talent in every field because tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in today’s classrooms.
