Seoul – K-pop sensation BTS will make their long-awaited comeback with a free concert on Saturday night at Gwanghwamun Square, one of Seoul’s most famous landmarks. The event is expected to attract tens of thousands of fans.
The seven-member group will perform songs from their first album in nearly four years, “ARIRANG,” named after Korea’s beloved traditional folk tune. Hybe Corp., BTS’ management company, said the album reflects the group’s origin and identity and carries an important message they want to share with fans.
Gwanghwamun Square, in the heart of Seoul, is named after the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the royal palace of Korea’s Joseon dynasty. The square is home to cultural events and statues of King Sejong, the creator of the Korean script, and Admiral Yi Sun-shin, a national hero. It has also been a site for major political rallies, symbolizing South Korea’s democracy.
The hour-long concert, which will be livestreamed globally on Netflix, marks BTS’ return after their military hiatus. Experts say the choice of Gwanghwamun emphasizes the group’s Korean roots and showcases traditional culture on a global stage.
Authorities expect around 20,000 fans at the square and 240,000 more in nearby areas watching on temporary screens. Roads near the site will be blocked, subway stations adjusted, and parts of Gyeongbokgung Palace closed for safety.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung praised BTS on X, calling them “a proud artist of the Republic of Korea” and said the concert will highlight the country’s cultural heritage. Some residents raised concerns over potential inconveniences, but experts note the public nature and cultural value of the event.
