The Philippines secured qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil after defeating Uzbekistan 2-0 in the Women’s Asian Cup playoffs on Thursday.
The match was played on the Gold Coast in Australia, where the Philippines delivered a strong performance in the second half. Angela Beard opened the scoring in the 47th minute with a well-timed volley, giving her team an early advantage after the break. Just five minutes later, Jaclyn Sawicki doubled the lead with a powerful header, sealing a crucial win.
With this victory, the Philippines have qualified for the Women’s World Cup for only the second time in their history. Their first appearance came in 2023, when the tournament was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. In that edition, they managed one win but finished at the bottom of their group.
The team has shown steady improvement in recent years under Australian coach Mark Torcaso. They also won a gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games last year, highlighting their growing strength in women’s football.
Along with the Philippines, Australia, China, Japan, and South Korea have already qualified for the World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
One final spot from Asia will be decided later on Thursday when North Korea face Taiwan in another playoff match between the losing quarter-finalists.
Uzbekistan, who are still searching for their first World Cup appearance, will get one more chance through the inter-confederation playoffs, where two additional spots are available.
The Asian Cup final will be played on Saturday, with Australia set to face Japan.
