At the Paris Olympics 2024, 18-year-old India Sardjoe made history by winning the first-ever Olympic breakdancing match. This debut event, known as "breaking," was the sole new sport introduced at this year's Games. Despite her groundbreaking victory, Sardjoe’s Olympic journey concluded on a bittersweet note as she narrowly missed a podium finish after a dramatic loss in the semi-finals.

Sardjoe's win in the initial round drew considerable attention, especially given her name, which seemed to suggest a connection to India. However, she is a Dutch breakdancer who represented the Netherlands in the newly added discipline. Her performances in the B-Girl Battle events were impressive, capturing the admiration of both the audience and judges.

On Friday, Sardjoe's breakthrough win marked a historic moment for the sport, but her campaign faced a tough turn the following day. In the semi-finals, she encountered a heartbreaking defeat, which led to her finishing out of the medal positions. She lost 1-2 in a closely contested bronze medal match against her Chinese opponent.

Sardjoe’s journey in Paris was not without its controversies. The debut of breaking was marred by an incident involving Afghanistan's Manisha Talash, who was disqualified from her opening match against Sardjoe. Talash, representing the Refugee team, was removed from the competition for wearing a cape emblazoned with the message "Free Afghan Women," which led to Sardjoe’s unchallenged win in that round.

The B-Girl Battle final saw Japan's Ami emerge victorious, clinching gold after a decisive 3-0 win over Lithuania's Nicka. In the B-Boys Battles, Canada’s Phil Wizard claimed the gold medal, defeating the French competitor Danny Dann.

Breaking's debut managed to draw substantial crowds and has sparked discussions about its future in the Olympics. Its inclusion was part of a broader trend, with sports like skateboarding, diving, and surfing making a return to the Games. Looking ahead to the Los Angeles Olympics, cricket (T20), baseball, softball, and lacrosse are set to make a comeback, while squash and flag football will make their first appearances.

Sardjoe’s remarkable performance not only highlighted her talent but also set a new precedent for breakdancing on the Olympic stage, promising an exciting future for the sport.
