In a defining moment for Indian cricket, the national women's team lifted their first-ever ICC Women's World Cup trophy, defeating South Africa by 52 runs at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on Sunday night. The triumph sparked celebrations across the nation, signaling a new era for Indian women’s cricket.
Batting first, India set an imposing target of 298/7, with Shafali Verma's fluent 87 leading the charge. Deepti Sharma added a steady 58, while Smriti Mandhana’s 45 and Richa Ghosh’s 34 provided vital support. The foundation was laid by a commanding 100-run opening partnership between Mandhana and Verma, setting the tone for a competitive total. South Africa fought back late but fell short of the mark.
Chasing 299, the Proteas started strongly, with Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt forging a brisk fifty-run opening stand. But a sharp direct hit from Amanjot Kaur dismissed Brits, and India quickly turned the momentum. Young pacer Sree Charani struck early, trapping Anneke Bosch LBW, while Shafali Verma’s quick strikes removed Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp.
The game-changing moment came from Deepti Sharma, who delivered a stunning 5/39 to dismantle South Africa’s middle order. Despite Wolvaardt’s fighting 101, South Africa was bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs, giving India a memorable 52-run win.
As the players celebrated under the roaring home crowd, the victory not only marked India’s first Women’s World Cup title but also highlighted the growing strength and potential of women’s cricket in the country. This historic achievement promises to inspire the next generation of cricketers and elevate the profile of the sport nationwide.
