Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill is facing a race against time to be fit for the second Test against South Africa, starting on November 22 in Guwahati. Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the first Test in Kolkata. After the end of play, he was taken to the hospital for medical tests and kept under observation. He was discharged the next day and has been recovering since then.

The injury caused worry among fans and team management, especially because it happened during a crucial series where India are already trailing 0-1. While reports suggested he might not travel, the cricket board later confirmed that Gill will join the squad in Guwahati.

In an official update, the cricket board shared important details about Gill’s condition. According to the medical team, Gill has been responding well to treatment and is stable enough to travel with the squad.

However, the board also mentioned that his participation in the second Test is still uncertain. He will continue to be monitored by the medical staff, and a final decision on whether he will play will be taken after further assessment.

The board clarified that although Gill is travelling with the team, it does not guarantee he will play. His long-term health and career remain the top priority.

Despite the official confirmation that Gill is travelling, several internal sources say he is highly unlikely to take the field in Guwahati. According to reports, doctors have advised him not to travel, as movement could worsen his neck injury.

One source said that Gill still wants to be with the team as their captain and help keep team morale high, especially when India are behind in the series. The source added that Gill playing the match would be a “medical miracle,” as even slight strain could affect his long-term career.

A final call on his playing status will be taken on November 21 after complete medical evaluation.

If Gill does not play the second Test, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead the side. Pant, who recently returned to international cricket after a long injury break, may be asked to take charge for the important match.

India lost the first Test by 30 runs at Eden Gardens, making the coming match a must-win for the hosts. Pant’s leadership will play a crucial role if Gill is unavailable.

There may also be changes in the Indian squad for the second Test. Reports suggest that Nitish Kumar Reddy has been asked to rejoin the team. Reddy, who has a Test century to his name, was earlier released from the squad to play in an unofficial ODI series.

With Gill doubtful and India needing a strong performance to level the series, Reddy might be considered for a place in the playing XI. His return could strengthen the middle order.

India are 0-1 down in the two-match series, making the Guwahati Test extremely important. Without their captain and key batter, the pressure will be high on the rest of the team to deliver.

The team management hopes Gill recovers quickly, but they also want to avoid risking his long-term health. As India prepare for the crucial match, all eyes are now on the final medical update scheduled before the Test.
