The Israeli Defense Forces have verified the identity of Ran Gvili, a police officer whose remains were held in Gaza for over 840 days, and they will be returned to Israel for burial.
This development is anticipated to facilitate a partial reopening of the Rafah Crossing connecting Gaza to Egypt, which serves as the region's primary access point to the outside world. Israeli officials had previously asserted that advancements regarding hostages were essential for reopening this crossing.
A technocratic committee for Gaza, backed by the US, indicated that the Rafah Crossing might reopen within the week, though an Israeli government spokesperson refrained from providing any specific timelines.
Ran Gvili lost his life during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which targeted Israeli communities in the south and initiated a protracted military response from Israel in Gaza. Gvili was off duty due to a previous injury at the time.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heralded the recovery of Gvili’s remains as an “incredible success for the State of Israel,” emphasizing its significance for the nation.
Gvili was one of the 251 individuals kidnapped during the October 7 events. Following a ceasefire agreement, 48 hostages were believed to remain in Gaza, with 28 presumed deceased. The return of all remaining hostages, both alive and deceased, is a crucial component of the agreement’s initial phase, but numerous other matters are still unsettled.
In Israel, the recovery of Gvili’s body is perceived as a meaningful step towards national healing for families grappling with months of not knowing the fate of their loved ones.
Concurrently, the United States has stated that it will transition to the next phase of its strategy to resolve the conflict, which will focus on rebuilding Gaza and its demilitarization.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem noted that the retrieval of Gvili’s remains illustrates Hamas’ commitment to the agreement, asserting that the group would continue backing the proposed national administration for Gaza and that the information they provided aided in locating the body.
Initially, the Rafah Crossing was expected to reopen as part of the ceasefire's first phase, yet Israeli officials opposed this, insisting that all hostages be returned first.
Additionally, reports suggest that Israel may impose restrictions on the number of Palestinians entering Gaza via Rafah and may necessitate security inspections at checkpoints controlled by Israel.
The October 2023 attack is reported to have caused approximately 1,200 fatalities in Israel, while Gaza health authorities have declared that over 71,000 Palestinians have died due to Israel’s military campaign since.
