When the United Arab Emirates was formed in 1971, its success rested on more than oil or geography — it rested on leadership, vision, and a spirit of unity. No one embodied that more than Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, often called the Father of the Nation. His leadership, values, and policies shaped the UAE’s foundation, instilling principles that still guide the country today.
Sheikh Zayed was born around 1918 in Abu Dhabi as the youngest son of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed. He spent much of his youth in Al Ain and among desert communities, learning tribal traditions, survival in harsh climates, and the art of consensus and listening. Over time he built a reputation for humility, fairness, and a deep connection to his people.
In 1946, Zayed was appointed to represent his brother, Sheikh Shakhbut, in the Eastern Region, centering on Al Ain. He used that role to improve infrastructure, water supply, health care, and education in villages that lacked amenities. These early administrative works showed his commitment to elevating remote areas. In 1966, Zayed succeeded his brother as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, ready for a new era of development.
With the discovery and export of oil in the 1960s, Abu Dhabi acquired wealth that could fund large-scale progress. Sheikh Zayed harnessed these revenues to build public institutions: roads, schools, hospitals, housing, agriculture, and urban infrastructure. He pursued balanced development: ensuring that rural communities benefited, not just the city centers. He also encouraged modernization with respect to tradition and local culture.
When the British announced their withdrawal in 1971, Zayed seized the moment to push for union. He believed that the seven emirates would be stronger together than apart — a vision many initially doubted. Through negotiation, persuasion, and trust-building, the UAE was formed on December 2, 1971, with Zayed as its first President. He held that role until his passing in 2004, guiding the nation through its formative decades.
Sheikh Zayed’s influence stemmed not just from decisions, but from how he led. He was known for being a keen listener, personally engaging with citizens in local majlis gatherings, and resolving disputes impartially. His diplomatic skills, patience, and wisdom earned him respect as a mediator, even beyond UAE borders.
A central tenet of his leadership was inclusivity — making sure all emirates had a voice, ensuring that citizens participated in national growth, and that development was shared. He emphasised sustainability and environmental stewardship, believing that development must preserve the land, conserve resources, and respect heritage. He also invested in human capital: education, healthcare, social welfare, and opportunities for Emiratis to grow in their home country.
Some of Sheikh Zayed’s most enduring legacies include:
Uniting the seven emirates into a stable federal system with cooperation and shared vision.
Using oil wealth to build modern infrastructures across the UAE: roads, schools, hospitals, water systems, and housing.
Ensuring rural and interior zones (like Al Ain) were not neglected, balancing city and hinterland development.
Advancing environmental consciousness: planting millions of trees, protection of deserts, wildlife conservation.
Promoting education and healthcare so that citizens had access to modern amenities and skills.
Championing humanitarianism, generosity, and philanthropy both at home and abroad.
His legacy is embedded not just in buildings and institutions, but in the culture of service and solidarity in the UAE.
Sheikh Zayed’s vision continues to shape modern UAE. His values — unity, foresight, respect, and generosity — remain central in national narratives. Subsequent leadership has often invoked his example, and programs like the “Year of Zayed” commemorate his centennial birth anniversary.
The UAE continues investing in sustainability, innovation, and human development — fields Zayed believed in long ago. His legacy also gives the country soft power: he is admired across the Arab world and beyond as a leader whose approach combined tradition and modern statecraft.
His life offers lessons in how a leader can blend humility and ambition, preserve identity while modernizing, and build institutions that outlast individuals.
In short: Sheikh Zayed wasn’t just a founder — he was the keeper of a vision and the architect of a values-based nation.
