Veteran Congress Leader Shivraj Patil Passes at 90

Shivraj Patil Chakurkar, a prominent leader in the Congress party and former Union Home Minister, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 90. He breathed his last at approximately 6:30 a.m. in his home in Devvar, Latur, after a lingering illness for which he was being treated. Patil's distinguished career included serving as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and obtaining various key ministerial portfolios. Throughout his lengthy political journey, he was influential in India's constitutional and parliamentary affairs.

Hailing from Chakur in Latur, he represented the Latur constituency in the Lok Sabha on seven occasions. Though he faced defeat in the 2004 elections, he remained active in senior roles, including Union Home Minister, through the Rajya Sabha. The Congress party and its associates expressed profound sorrow at his demise, extending heartfelt condolences to his family.

Patil was recognized as a reliable and seasoned figure in Indian politics. He held a Science degree from Osmania University and pursued Law at Mumbai University, first winning a Lok Sabha seat from Latur in 1980 and maintaining his parliamentary presence until 1999 as a distinguished leader.

He occupied vital ministerial roles during the tenures of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Serving as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996, Patil was an essential representative in various international parliamentary meetings. Additionally, he undertook significant responsibilities within the Congress party under Sonia Gandhi's guidance.

After his 2004 election loss, the party reaffirmed its confidence in him by appointing him Union Home Minister. He later resigned in 2008 in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, taking moral responsibility for security failures during his term.
