For many people worldwide, becoming a citizen of Spain can take as long as ten years of continuous residence. But for Filipinos, the story is very different. Thanks to deep historical and cultural ties between the Philippines and Spain, Filipinos only need two years of legal residence in Spain before applying for full Spanish citizenship.
This opportunity is one of the fastest and easiest paths to European citizenship available anywhere in the world. The special arrangement also applies to nationals from Ibero-American countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, and others — but for Filipinos, the benefits are especially meaningful.
A Shared Past Between Spain and the Philippines
The Philippines and Spain have a long connection. Spain colonized the Philippines for 333 years, leaving behind Spanish surnames, Catholic traditions, and parts of the Spanish language that still appear in Filipino culture today. Because of this shared history, Spain recognizes Filipinos under Article 22 of Spain’s Civil Code, which grants a shorter residency requirement for naturalization.
Normally, foreigners must live in Spain for ten years to be eligible. But Filipinos, along with people from Latin America and other Ibero-American nations, can apply in just two years.
In Portugal, by comparison, the same group of people must stay at least five years before applying.
Why Spanish Citizenship Matters for Filipinos
Becoming a Spanish citizen opens many doors for Filipinos living abroad. Here are some of the biggest advantages:
1. Full Citizenship in Just Two Years
Instead of waiting for a decade, Filipinos can unlock full rights as Spanish citizens after only 24 months of legal residence.
2. Visa-Free Travel Across the Globe
A Spanish passport allows entry into 159 countries without a visa, including the UK, Japan, and almost all of Europe. This makes global travel far easier than using a Philippine passport.
3. Access to World-Class Healthcare
Spain’s public healthcare system is often ranked among the best in the world. Doctor visits, hospital care, and even surgeries are either free or very affordable.
4. Dual Citizenship Option
Filipinos don’t have to give up their original nationality. They can keep their Filipino passport while enjoying the benefits of being an EU citizen.
5. Easy Driver’s License Exchange
Filipinos can swap their Philippine driver’s license for a Spanish one without taking additional driving exams.
6. Affordable Education
Public universities in Spain are very affordable compared to other Western countries, with fees starting around €700 per year. Children can also access free bilingual schooling.
7. Mediterranean Lifestyle
Spain is famous for its sunny beaches, relaxed lifestyle, siestas, flamenco music, and delicious food like tapas and paella. For many, it’s not just a change of country but an upgrade in quality of life.

Steps to Apply for Spanish Citizenship
For Filipinos who want to take this path, the process involves three key steps:
1. Residency
Stay in Spain legally for two continuous years. Temporary trips abroad are fine as long as Spain remains your primary residence.
2. Exams
Pass two mandatory tests:
* DELE A2 – Spanish language proficiency test
* CCSE – Exam about Spanish society, culture, and constitution
3. Application & Oath
Submit the application at the Civil Registry, pay a fee of around €100, and once approved, attend an oath-taking ceremony known as Jura.
Processing Time
Even though the requirement is two years, the actual approval process can take longer. On average, cases take about one year to process, though some applicants report waiting up to three years depending on workload and bureaucracy.
What Has Changed Recently?
Spain once had a popular Golden Visa program, which gave residency to foreigners who invested heavily in Spanish property or businesses. But as of April 3, 2025, this program has officially ended.
Now, alternative visas like the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), the Digital Nomad Visa, and the Entrepreneur Residence Permit are being promoted instead.
Important Note
The information above is for general awareness only. Anyone interested in applying for citizenship or residency should seek advice from a licensed immigration lawyer or professional consultant to avoid legal mistakes.
Why This Matters
For millions of Filipinos dreaming of living and working in Europe, this is a unique opportunity. While others may wait a decade, Filipinos can become Spanish citizens in just two years — gaining not only a new passport but also access to better healthcare, education, and global opportunities.
Spain isn’t just another destination for Filipinos; it’s a place where history, culture, and modern opportunities meet, creating a powerful bridge between Asia and Europe.
