Dubai – Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala is ready to kick off a promising 2026 campaign, building on a remarkable 2025 that saw her enter the WTA Top 50 for the first time. The 20-year-old will make her season debut at the ASB Classic in Auckland this January, aiming to consolidate her status among the world’s rising tennis stars.
Eala recently shared the spotlight as a flag-bearer for the Philippines during the opening ceremony of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, a proud moment alongside volleyball standout Bryan Bagunas at Rajamangala Stadium. “It was an exciting experience and a huge honour to represent our country,” Eala said.
Currently ranked No. 52, Eala is set to be the fourth seed at the WTA 250 event in Auckland. The tournament is expected to be led by world No. 14 Elina Svitolina, with Emma Navarro (15), Iva Jovic (35), and Janice Tjen (53) rounding out the top seeds. The draw also includes tennis veterans Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens, both entering via wildcards, alongside Britain’s Katie Boulter.
Last year’s champion Clara Tauson will skip Auckland for Brisbane, while Naomi Osaka, runner-up in 2025, is slated for the United Cup. For Eala, the seeded position marks a milestone in her career, reflecting a meteoric rise from No. 147 in 2024, when she primarily competed in lower-tier events.
With her strong baseline game, mental toughness, and growing international experience, Eala is not only representing the Philippines but also emerging as a player to watch on the WTA circuit in 2026. Her performance in Auckland could set the tone for what promises to be another breakthrough year.
