East Timor has officially become the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), marking a historic milestone for the young nation. The accession documents were signed during the opening of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, witnessed by leaders from all member states and several guest heads of state.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao described the moment as a “historic beginning” for East Timor, emphasizing the potential for economic growth, trade, and investment opportunities. “For the people of East Timor, this is not only a dream realised, but a powerful affirmation of our journey,” he said.
The nation, which gained independence in 2002, has been working for years to meet ASEAN’s criteria for membership, including economic, political, and security frameworks. Joining ASEAN now positions East Timor for closer regional integration, access to economic initiatives, and collaboration in areas such as education, infrastructure, and technology.
ASEAN leaders welcomed East Timor warmly, highlighting the significance of its inclusion in Southeast Asia’s regional bloc. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono noted that the accession marks the beginning of a deeper partnership, with support from all member states essential for East Timor’s full integration.
For East Timor, the ASEAN membership is expected to accelerate foreign investment and trade, strengthen regional diplomacy, and provide a platform for the nation to participate actively in shaping Southeast Asia’s future.
