Tanisha Crasto, a badminton player born in Dubai, has secured her spot in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, as reported by both the Times of India and khel.com. Partnered with Ashwini Ponnappa, the 20-year-old Indian doubles star earned their qualification through consistent performances.
Only the top 16 doubles pairs globally are granted the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games. Despite losing in the round of 16 at the ongoing Asian Badminton Championships in China, Crasto and Ponnappa clinched the 12th eligible spot for the Paris Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
Their qualification was solidified mathematically after other contenders lost their respective matches at the Asian Badminton Championships. Clifford Crasto, Tanisha’s father, expressed immense joy over her achievement, highlighting the sacrifices made to support her journey.
Tanisha, formerly a student at Indian High School in Dubai, transitioned to India in 2017, where she excelled in badminton. Training at the renowned Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad propelled her career, leading to her inclusion in the Indian national team.
Partnering with Ponnappa since January last year, they initially weren't even in the top 100 rankings. However, through perseverance and hard work, they climbed the ranks, securing victories in tournaments like the Guwahati Masters Super 100, Abu Dhabi Masters Super 100, and Nantes International Challenge.
Their journey to the Olympics included notable performances in events such as the Syed Modi Super 300 and Odisha Open Super 100, reaching the finals, and making it to the semifinals at the Indonesia Masters Super 500 and quarterfinals at the Malaysia Open Super 1000 and Spain Masters Super 300.
For Tanisha, reaching the Olympics has been a lifelong dream, one that her father shares. With determination and dedication, they've achieved this milestone together, making it a moment of immense pride and joy for their family.
