ASPIRE, the group behind big challenges and global contests for Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has announced that its popular event, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), will happen again. The 2025 race will be held on November 15 at Yas Marina Circuit and will offer a prize of US$2.25 million. This year, they are also starting a new global virtual racing series.
The first A2RL event took place in April 2024 and was very successful, with over 10,000 people watching in person and more than 1 million people watching online from around the world. The second season of A2RL is now coming back with bigger goals, more international teams, and a new platform to help improve self-driving car technology.

This year, top research teams from 10 countries will take part. For the first time, teams from France and Japan will join the competition. They will compete alongside returning teams from the USA, Germany, China, Singapore, Italy, and the UAE. A2RL is the world’s most advanced contest for self-driving car systems, helping to bring the technology closer to real-life use.
H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Advisor to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and Secretary General of ATRC, said, “A2RL is not just about testing self-driving technology, it is about speeding up its development in very tough conditions. It shows amazing engineering skills and helps create the future of transport. From fast racing to real-world uses, we show what is possible when countries invest in new technology and push the world to work smarter and compete fairly.”
Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, said, “By combining the excitement of real racing with the accuracy of virtual testing, we allow the world’s best experts to push AI limits. This year’s bigger league shows Abu Dhabi’s strong support for innovation that creates real change quickly and on a large scale.”
This news was shared during the Make it in the Emirates Forum in Abu Dhabi. The new racecar, called Emirates Autonomous Vehicle (EAV 24), is an improved self-driving racecar made in the UAE. It shows how the country is growing in AI, robots, and fast cars. Built on the Super Formula SF23 racecar, the EAV-24 has better sensors, stronger computers, and improved control systems to handle the tough demands of self-driving racing.
The SF23, first shown in the first race, is made with eco-friendly materials and weighs 690 kg. It is the fastest open-wheel racecar in the world after Formula One cars, reaching speeds up to 300 km/h. It has advanced brakes, electronic throttle control, and a special autonomous system, giving each team a top platform to develop their AI driving skills and reach the best performance.
A new feature this season is the A2RL SIM-Sprint. This is a set of virtual races to help teams quickly improve their AI programs and test their self-driving cars in many different situations. The SIM Sprint keeps A2RL active all year and gives teams a safe space to test rare or hard-to-create scenarios, which are important to make strong and safe AI.
In the future, A2RL plans to open the SIM Sprint to more people like fans, independent developers, and new teams worldwide. There will be a clear path for new talent to join, starting from Sim Academy, then Sim Pro, and finally qualifying for the real-world A2RL races. This will help more people get involved and shape the future of fast, smart cars.
Through ASPIRE and ATRC, A2RL is making Abu Dhabi a world leader in smart, high-speed self-driving technology. It is changing how intelligent systems are made, tested, and used.
