A local supermarket chain has reported a significant increase in the sales of reusable bags, marking a 30 to 40 per cent rise. This follows Dubai's comprehensive ban on single-use plastic and paper bags across retail outlets, encouraging shoppers to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
Mohammed Yusuf, who previously relied on single-use bags, initially hesitated but has since adapted to using reusable bags for daily and household needs. He reflects, "It wasn’t a choice I would have made if the ban did not come into place, but I’ve definitely adapted. Reusable bags have proven cheaper and far more efficient."
The shift towards eco-friendly practices has gained traction among residents, evident in the increased sales observed at Al Maya supermarket chain. Kamal Vachani, a partner at Al Maya Group, noted the significant uptick in reusable bag purchases following the ban enforcement.
Under the new regulations, non-compliance incurs a Dh200 penalty, with repeat offences doubling the fine up to Dh2,000. Authorities urge vigilance and reporting of non-compliant stores to the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.

Kamal Vachani emphasized the public's swift adoption of reusable bags as indicative of high awareness and readiness for environmentally-friendly choices. He affirmed Al Maya Group's commitment to promoting sustainable solutions in alignment with the UAE's green initiatives.
Similarly, Carrefour has seen a 13 per cent increase in reusable bag sales this year compared to the previous year, according to Samar Elmnhrawy, senior vice-president of Human Capital and Sustainability at Majid Al Futtaim Retail. Elmnhrawy highlighted Carrefour's efforts in encouraging sustainable lifestyles through various programmes and incentives.
Residents like Beth Garner have long prioritized reducing plastic use, while others, like Shoaib Gill, appreciate the durability and convenience of reusable bags over their disposable counterparts. Younger generations, like teenager Ayah Chaudhry, have also embraced the shift away from plastic, opting for reusable alternatives.
Overall, Dubai's ban on single-use bags has spurred a widespread behavioural change towards sustainability, with residents and retailers alike rallying behind efforts for a cleaner, greener environment.
