The flying taxi is a small electric aircraft that seats up to four passengers. It takes off and lands vertically—just like a helicopter—but it runs on electricity, which means it’s quieter and cleaner. It uses automated onboard systems for navigation, so it can operate without a human pilot in the cockpit.
On Track for 2026
Dubai aims to begin public flying taxi services by 2026. To get there, the RTA is building vertiports—special landing and takeoff zones—and mapping out dedicated air routes across the city. These developments align with the authority’s broader goal of delivering fast, green, and efficient transport options.
RTA chief Mattar Al Tayer described the test as “a big step toward transforming city travel,” adding that “Dubai wants to lead the world in new ways of getting around, and today’s flight shows we’re heading in the right direction.”
Joby Aviation CEO JoeBen Bevirt shared similar enthusiasm: “Dubai has vision and gets things done. We’re proud to work together to shape the future of travel.”
Why It Matters
This achievement goes beyond demonstrating new technology. One of the biggest challenges in growing cities is traffic congestion. Aerial taxis can help ease that burden. For example, a drive that now takes 30 to 40 minutes could be reduced to under 10 minutes.
Moreover, these electric air taxis support Dubai’s environmental goals. They produce no emissions, helping reduce pollution in the city. As urban areas continue to expand, Dubai is positioning itself for a future where fast, clean, and smart transport becomes the norm.
