Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon has shared his disappointment after being left out of a home Test match for the first time in 14 years, but he says his full focus is now on the upcoming third Test at Adelaide Oval, a venue that holds special meaning for him. The 38-year-old is expected to return to the playing eleven alongside captain Pat Cummins as Australia looks to continue its strong form in the series.
Lyon said missing out on the Brisbane Test was tough because he loves playing Test cricket and always wants to be part of the team when a match is on. However, he added that there is no benefit in looking back and that he is now concentrating on what role he can play if given the chance in Adelaide. Australia is already 2-0 ahead in the series, but Lyon has bowled only two overs so far, something he hopes to change soon.
The Adelaide Oval is a familiar place for Lyon, who once worked as part of the ground staff there before becoming Australia’s most successful off-spinner. At this venue, he has taken 63 Test wickets, and he believes it could offer him the opportunity he has been waiting for in this series. He said he has not yet had the chance to make a real impact, but he is ready when that moment arrives.
Head groundsman Damian Hough, who previously worked with Lyon, said the pitch prepared for the match should help spin bowlers. He explained that spin has always played a role at Adelaide and should continue to be an important part of pitches across Australia, giving bowlers like Lyon a chance to make a difference.
Lyon is currently on 562 Test wickets, just one short of former fast bowler Glenn McGrath’s tally among Australia’s leading wicket-takers. Despite his age, he made it clear that retirement is not on his mind. He said his long career and 140 Test matches show that he has nothing to prove and that his dream remains to keep playing and representing Australia cricket for as long as possible.
