Commuters in the heart of Barcelona, Spain, have been able to ride a bus for free this week, but with a twist: the bus doesn’t have a driver. This mini-bus is fully autonomous, meaning it operates without anyone behind the wheel. According to a report from AP, Renault, the French car company, is testing this driverless bus in Barcelona as part of a new project.
The autonomous bus is running on a 2.2-kilometer (1.3-mile) route with four stops in the central area of Barcelona. People can hop on and ride the bus as part of the testing process, which aims to see how well the bus works in real-life traffic situations.

Renault has partnered with WeRide, a company that specializes in self-driving cars, to develop this new bus. They first introduced the driverless bus at the French Open venue last year, but now it’s being tested on the streets of Barcelona. The project isn’t just happening in Spain; Renault is also testing the bus in other places like Valence, France, and Zurich airport.
This test is an important step toward understanding how autonomous vehicles could work in everyday transportation. If successful, it could be a big part of how we get around in the future, offering a safer, more efficient way to travel without human drivers.
