The driver of a car that crashed in north London, killing a teenager who had recently been freed from prison in Dubai, has admitted responsibility for the fatal collision.
Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, 20, pleaded guilty on Friday to causing the death of 19-year-old Marcus Fakana by dangerous driving following a police pursuit that ended in a devastating crash in Tottenham. Huseen also admitted causing serious injury to another passenger and driving without a licence or insurance at the time.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 3 October last year, when Huseen was driving a BMW carrying two passengers. Metropolitan Police officers had attempted to stop what they described as a “vehicle of interest” in Pretoria Road, north London. After a brief pursuit, officers temporarily lost sight of the car.
Moments later, police found the BMW had crashed into a lorry in The Roundway area of Tottenham. The impact was severe.
Marcus Fakana, who was sitting in the car as a passenger, was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries. Another passenger sustained serious injuries and required medical treatment.
Huseen appeared via video link from HMP Pentonville at Wood Green Crown Court, where he admitted causing Fakana’s death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury to the second passenger. He also pleaded guilty to driving while uninsured and without a licence.
The case has drawn wider attention because of Fakana’s recent and highly publicised release from prison in Dubai.
Just three months before the crash, Fakana, from Tottenham, had been freed from a jail in the United Arab Emirates after spending around a year behind bars. He had been arrested during a family holiday in the UAE in summer 2024, when, at the age of 18, he became involved in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl from London.
His imprisonment sparked concern and media coverage in the UK, and he was eventually released following a royal pardon granted by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His family had hoped the teenager would finally be able to rebuild his life after returning home.
Instead, his life was cut tragically short in the early hours of a London morning.
Prosecutors told the court that Huseen was attempting to evade police when the crash occurred. Although officers had briefly lost sight of the BMW, they arrived at the scene shortly afterwards to find the vehicle destroyed and its occupants badly injured.
Huseen was remanded in custody following the hearing. The court confirmed that a sentencing date will be set at a further hearing on 27 February.
The case has renewed calls for tougher action against dangerous driving and police pursuit-related crashes, particularly in residential areas of the capital.
For Fakana’s family, the tragedy marks a heartbreaking end to a story that had only recently turned toward hope. After surviving a year in a foreign prison and finally returning home, he was killed in a matter of seconds on a London street.
