Delhi-NCR woke up to a thick layer of smog on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching hazardous levels today, severely affecting visibility across the city. Residents in areas like India Gate, Mahipalpur, and East Delhi reported poor air quality, prompting urgent calls for action against rising pollution.
Environmental activists and concerned citizens staged protests at India Gate on Sunday demanding immediate measures to improve air quality. Several protesters were briefly detained by authorities for assembling without permission but were later released. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the government’s response, urging decisive action on pollution rather than targeting citizens asking for clean air.
Rahul Gandhi commented, “Delhi-NCR AQI is at dangerous levels today. Citizens peacefully demanding clean air should not be treated like criminals. Urgent action is needed.”
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, ahead of MCD bypolls, highlighted the lack of development under previous governments, linking the issue of pollution to urban planning and infrastructure gaps. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal announced plans to raise the matter of worsening air quality in Delhi during the upcoming winter session of Parliament, warning that winter smog turns the capital into a “gas chamber” affecting lungs, heart, brain, and even unborn babies.
In addition to the pollution crisis, Delhi saw other incidents highlighting public safety concerns, including a tragic electrocution death of a 23-year-old woman in Mahipalpur.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Citizens are advised to limit outdoor activities, wear masks, and follow air quality updates, as the Delhi-NCR AQI remains critically high today.
The rising pollution levels today have sparked widespread discussions across social media and civic platforms, with calls for immediate government intervention to prevent further public health risks.
