Men also experience a kind of hormonal change called andropause, often called “male menopause.” Dr Sanjay Prakash J, a urologist in Chennai, says men’s testosterone slowly drops as they age. This can affect energy, mood, sex drive, and overall health.
What is Andropause?
Unlike women’s menopause, which happens suddenly, men experience this hormone change slowly. Testosterone declines around 0.4% per year starting in the mid-30s. Other factors like stress, diabetes, and obesity can make symptoms worse.
Common Signs of Male Menopause
Fatigue and Low Energy: Feeling tired even after resting.
Mood Swings: Irritability, anxiety, or mild depression.
Low Libido: Less interest in sex or performance problems.
Loss of Muscle Mass and More Fat: Muscles weaken and belly fat increases.
Sleep Disturbances: Trouble sleeping or hot flashes in some men.
How Andropause is Diagnosed
Doctors check testosterone levels through blood tests and review symptoms carefully. They also consider other health problems to make sure symptoms are not from illness or stress.
Treatment Options
Lifestyle Changes: Exercise, healthy diet, reduce alcohol, and manage stress.
Treating Other Health Issues: Control diabetes, obesity, and sleep problems.
Psychological Support: Counseling helps with mood swings and anxiety.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT): Used only if needed, with doctor supervision. Available in injections, gels, or implants.
Important Precautions
TRT is not safe for men with prostate or male breast cancer, uncontrolled heart failure, blood clot risk, or men planning to have children.
Andropause is a real change in men’s hormones. Awareness, regular check-ups, and healthy lifestyle habits can help men stay energetic, confident, and sexually healthy. Ageing happens, but feeling old does not have to.
