The New York Jets delivered a remarkable performance on Sunday, rewriting their franchise history in a single quarter. The team produced two electrifying special teams touchdowns within minutes—one from a kickoff and another from a punt—during their game against the Cleveland Browns. The crowd at the stadium witnessed an unforgettable start as the Jets turned a 7-0 deficit into a quick 14-7 lead.
It was the first time ever that the Jets achieved both a kickoff return and a punt return touchdown in the same game. The team had previously recorded two kickoff returns in one game and two punt returns in another, but never one of each. This special moment added a new chapter to the team’s long and eventful history.
The action began shortly after the Browns opened the scoring to take a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Kene Nwangwu showed incredible speed and vision, bursting through Cleveland’s defensive line. He dodged multiple tacklers and raced 99 yards up the right sideline to score a thrilling touchdown.
Cleveland’s kicker, Andre Szmyt, made a desperate diving attempt to stop him but missed as Nwangwu sprinted past to complete one of the longest returns of the NFL season. His run not only energized his teammates but also set the tone for what became a record-breaking day for the Jets.
The excitement did not stop there. Just moments later, the Jets forced a quick three-and-out from the Browns, forcing them to punt. Isaiah Williams, positioned deep in his own half, caught the punt cleanly and made his move.
Williams ran straight up the right sideline, dodging defenders effortlessly, and returned the ball 74 yards untouched for another touchdown. The crowd erupted as the Jets took a 14-7 lead with 5:45 still remaining in the opening quarter. It was an incredible showcase of speed, awareness, and teamwork on special teams.
This achievement is not only rare for the Jets but also unusual in the wider NFL. The last time any NFL team recorded both a kickoff and punt return touchdown in the same game was on October 15, 2017, when the Baltimore Ravens did it against the Chicago Bears.
Even more remarkable, the last time both such scores occurred in the first quarter of a game was in 2007, when the Los Angeles Chargers accomplished the feat. The Jets’ performance now joins this elite company in league history, marking an impressive moment for their special teams unit.
Special teams often go unnoticed compared to offense and defense, but on this Sunday, they were the heroes for New York. Both Nwangwu and Williams displayed great coordination with their blockers, and their awareness on the field made the difference. Their explosive plays provided an early cushion and shifted the momentum firmly in the Jets’ favor.
Head coach Robert Saleh praised his special teams unit after the game, noting how their preparation and discipline paid off. He also credited the team’s energy, saying that performances like these show the depth and versatility within the Jets’ roster.
Jets fans had plenty to cheer about as they witnessed history unfold before their eyes. Social media platforms lit up with excitement as clips of the two return touchdowns spread quickly, with many fans calling it one of the most exciting first quarters they had ever seen from the team.
For a franchise that has seen its share of ups and downs, Sunday’s performance served as a reminder of the team’s potential and fighting spirit. It was a proud moment for the players, coaches, and supporters alike.
The Jets’ strong start in this game gives them momentum as they look to continue their push this season. With the defense holding firm and special teams performing at an elite level, the team appears determined to build on this victory.
As the season progresses, performances like this could prove crucial in defining the Jets’ playoff hopes. For now, fans will savor this historic day when both Kene Nwangwu and Isaiah Williams etched their names into Jets folklore with two unforgettable touchdowns.
