The United States is experiencing its worst airline disruption in years, with more than 2,800 flights cancelled and over 10,000 delayed, as the federal government shutdown continues to impact aviation operations.
The cancellations and delays on Sunday, November 9, mark the third consecutive day of government-mandated flight cuts ordered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. With the shutdown now entering its 40th day, federal aviation workers have not been paid, prompting airlines to scale back operations to maintain safety.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned travelers that the situation could worsen in the lead-up to Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel periods in the US. Millions of Americans typically fly during this time, intensifying the impact of staffing shortages.
The FAA initially directed airlines to reduce 4% of daily flights at 40 major airports starting Friday. This reduction is set to rise to 6% on Tuesday and 10% by November 14. Major carriers, including United, Delta, American, and Alaska Airlines, have urged Congress to pass legislation ending the shutdown to prevent further disruptions.
In response, the US Senate voted late Sunday to advance a bill aimed at ending the shutdown, sending airline stocks higher in pre-market trading. United Airlines shares rose 1.9%, while Delta and American Airlines climbed 1.4% each, and Alaska Air increased by 1%.
American Airlines emphasized the urgency, highlighting the hardships faced by travelers due to unpaid federal workers and extensive flight cancellations. “Our customers have endured thousands of delays and cancellations, and federal aviation employees deserve to be paid,” the airline stated.
As the government shutdown continues, travelers are advised to check flight statuses and plan for potential delays in the coming days, especially around major holiday travel hubs.
