Dhruv Jurel’s outstanding batting form ahead of the India–South Africa Test series has created a selection headache for the Indian team management. The first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata will mark the return of Rishabh Pant, and the selectors now face the difficult choice of fitting both Pant and Jurel into the playing XI.
The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter’s recent performances have impressed everyone. His consistent scoring for India A has made a strong case for his inclusion, even as Pant returns as the vice-captain and first-choice wicketkeeper.
In the second four-day match against South Africa A in Bengaluru, Jurel produced a stunning performance, scoring centuries in both innings. Although India A lost after the visitors chased a big target of 417 runs, Jurel’s double ton stood out as one of the best individual efforts of the series.
He became only the second Indian player to score two centuries in a single First-Class match while representing India A. This achievement has pushed his name forward for Test selection and made the management reconsider their final XI.
Rishabh Pant’s comeback adds excitement and competition. As vice-captain and one of India’s most dangerous Test batters, Pant is expected to walk straight into the XI. But his inclusion could mean that Jurel, despite his form, may miss out.
Both players are wicketkeepers and natural stroke-makers. Their presence gives India flexibility, but playing both would require changing the team balance. This challenge has led to debate among cricket experts on whether the management should make room for Jurel at another batting position.
Former opener Aakash Chopra shared his view that both Pant and Jurel should play. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said, “Pant is vice-captain, so he will play. But Jurel’s form is too good to ignore. A place should be made for him in the XI.”
He suggested that India could consider dropping all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has not had a big impact yet. “Sai Sudharsan can continue at No. 3, and Nitish can be replaced to make space for Jurel,” Chopra added.
Former Indian pacer Varun Aaron also praised Jurel’s form. He said that the Indian team has a “good headache” with both Pant and Jurel performing well. “If Nitish Kumar Reddy is only bowling a few overs, they might as well play Jurel, who can add more strength with the bat,” Aaron said.
He further explained that Jurel’s success in real matches shows his readiness for the next level. “You can practice all you want in the nets, but playing under match pressure is different. Jurel’s runs show that he can handle that pressure,” Aaron observed.
Aaron also highlighted the importance of match practice for both Jurel and Pant. After Pant’s long break due to injury, the return to live matches is helping him regain rhythm. At the same time, Jurel’s back-to-back performances show his growing confidence and maturity.
Match experience under pressure, Aaron said, is what separates good players from great ones. Both wicketkeepers bring different styles—Pant’s aggression and Jurel’s calmness—giving India flexibility across formats.
Dhruv Jurel’s First-Class numbers support his case for selection. Across 30 matches, he has scored 1,740 runs at an average of 58.00, with five centuries. In his seven Test appearances for India, he has scored 430 runs at 47.77, including his maiden hundred against the West Indies earlier this year.
His ability to stay composed under pressure and build long partnerships has made him one of India’s most promising young cricketers. His performance as both a wicketkeeper and middle-order batter adds depth to India’s lineup.
While this selection dilemma may look complicated, it is actually a positive sign for Indian cricket. Having two talented wicketkeeper-batters in top form means India has strong backup options. It also allows flexibility depending on match conditions.
The team management will likely take a final call based on the pitch and balance of the side. However, Jurel’s brilliant performances ensure that even if he doesn’t play the first Test, his name will remain in strong consideration throughout the series.
Dhruv Jurel’s run of form before the South Africa series has put India’s selectors in a tough but happy position. With Rishabh Pant back and Jurel shining, the battle for a place in the Test XI is heating up. Whatever the decision, Jurel’s performances have made one thing clear — he is now a serious contender for a regular spot in India’s Test team.
