Chinese Teen Badminton Player Dies After Collapsing in Indonesia Match

A 17-year-old Chinese badminton player tragically passed away after collapsing on court during an Asian tournament held in Yogyakarta province, Indonesia. Zhang Zhijie was competing against Kazuma Kawano of Japan at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships on Sunday when he suddenly collapsed and experienced seizures.

Officials from the Badminton Association of Indonesia promptly administered medical treatment on the court and quickly transported Zhang via ambulance to a nearby hospital. Subsequently, he was transferred to Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, a prominent government medical facility in Yogyakarta.

Broto Happy, spokesperson for the Badminton Association of Indonesia, announced during a press conference that medical examinations conducted at both hospitals confirmed Zhang had suffered sudden cardiac arrest.

In mourning Zhang's untimely death, badminton players and officials in Yogyakarta observed a minute of silence on Monday morning before the tournament's quarterfinal matches commenced. Badminton Asia expressed profound sadness over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to Zhang's parents and family, acknowledging the loss of a talented player within the badminton community.

The Chinese Badminton Association also conveyed its condolences and pledged support to Zhang's family. They described him as a dedicated athlete who excelled as a member of the national youth badminton team. The association highlighted the swift response of their team's leadership, coach, doctor, translator, and tournament medical staff in attending to Zhang when he initially fell ill on the court.

In an official statement, the Chinese association expressed deep sorrow over Zhang's passing and expressed gratitude to the broader society for their support during this difficult time. They reassured the public of their commitment to assisting Zhang's family in any way possible.
