Central Vietnam is grappling with a new wave of deadly floods and landslides, triggered by torrential rain that has battered the region since the weekend. According to a government report released on Wednesday, at least eight people have lost their lives, while dozens more are reported missing or displaced.

Meteorological authorities said that rainfall has exceeded 1,100 millimeters in several areas, making this one of the heaviest rainfalls in the region in recent years. The affected areas include key districts in the country’s central provinces, known both for their vital coffee production belt and popular coastal tourist destinations.

The floods have caused widespread destruction, submerging homes, sweeping away vehicles, and blocking major transportation routes. Emergency teams have been deployed to rescue stranded residents, but local authorities warned that the ongoing downpours could further complicate relief efforts.

Traders and agricultural experts are also sounding alarms over the impact on the coffee harvest, which is currently underway. Central Vietnam is one of the country’s main coffee-growing regions, and prolonged flooding could damage crops, delay harvesting, and disrupt the supply chain. Coffee traders have warned that this may lead to price fluctuations both domestically and in export markets.

“The combination of heavy rainfall, landslides, and overflowing rivers is a serious concern for both local communities and the agricultural economy,” said Nguyen Van Thanh, a local official in one of the hardest-hit provinces. “We are urging residents to evacuate high-risk areas and follow safety instructions immediately.”

Central Vietnam has long been vulnerable to natural disasters, especially during the rainy season. The combination of steep terrain, deforested hills, and intense tropical storms has historically caused recurrent flooding and landslides, often resulting in significant human and economic losses.

Authorities are monitoring weather patterns closely and have advised fishermen and farmers to suspend activities in flood-prone zones. Emergency shelters have been opened to accommodate displaced families, and relief supplies such as food, water, and medical assistance are being distributed.

As the situation develops, officials continue to stress the importance of preparedness and swift action to mitigate further casualties. With more rain expected over the coming days, central Vietnam faces a critical period where coordinated disaster management will be crucial to saving lives and minimizing economic losses.
