Jakarta, Indonesia, November 30, 2025 – The devastating toll from catastrophic floods and landslides spurred by cyclonic rains in Sumatra, Indonesia, has surged to 303, as reported by the head of the nation’s disaster response agency on Saturday. Previously, 174 fatalities were noted. Tens of thousands have been forced from their homes, while hundreds remain stranded as rescue initiatives struggle to navigate tough conditions.
A rare tropical storm in the Malacca Strait has exacerbated the extreme weather effects, affecting areas in Malaysia and southern Thailand as well. In Thailand, official estimates now reveal that 162 individuals have perished due to the floods, an increase from the earlier count of 145, according to government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat.
In Sumatra, approximately 80,000 individuals have been evacuated, while at least 279 remain unaccounted for across three provinces, as indicated by Suharyanto, head of the disaster management agency. Rescue teams are deploying helicopters to deliver urgent supplies to isolated regions in northern Sumatra, where landslides have obstructed roads and severed communication lines.
“We are working to reopen the route from North Tapanuli to Sibolga, which has been completely cut off for three days,” Suharyanto informed journalists. Authorities are also engaged in clearing road obstructions caused by landslides, as many individuals remain trapped in dire need of food and medical assistance. The military is set to be deployed further on Sunday to enhance relief operations.
In the Central Tapanuli area, desperate residents have resorted to attempting to seize supplies, highlighting the urgent stress faced by the affected communities. Authorities are relentlessly coordinating evacuations, aid distribution, and healthcare services amidst exceedingly difficult circumstances.
The alarming floods and landslides across Indonesia and Thailand reveal the severe ramifications of cyclones in Southeast Asia, resulting in thousands of displacements, destroyed infrastructure, and communities grappling with recovery efforts. Emergency teams are urging locals to stay alert as forecasts indicate continued heavy rainfall in the vicinity.
