In a jaw-dropping deal that has set a new benchmark in California's real estate history, the founder of Oakley, James Jannard, has sold his luxurious Malibu residence for an astounding $210 million. This transaction makes it the most expensive home ever sold in the state, surpassing even the $200 million purchase made by Jay-Z and Beyonce for their own Malibu compound last year.
Jannard, who established the renowned eyewear brand Oakley in 1975, purchased the property back in 2012 for a mere $75 million, making a substantial profit from its recent sale. According to reports from the Los Angeles Times, which reviewed real estate records, the identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, though the purchase was executed through a Delaware-based limited liability company.

Situated on 9.5 acres of prime clifftop overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the sprawling 15,000-square-foot estate boasts eight bedrooms, an impressive 14 bathrooms, a spacious courtyard, a gym, and two guesthouses. Its enviable location includes a private 300-foot stretch of oceanfront, adding to its exclusivity and allure.
Malibu, a highly sought-after beachfront enclave located just 45 minutes outside Los Angeles, has long been a magnet for celebrities and the ultra-wealthy seeking privacy and luxury. With this record-breaking sale by Jannard and the notable purchases by other high-profile individuals like Jay-Z, Beyonce, and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who reportedly paid $177 million for an estate in 2021, Malibu now boasts three of the most expensive homes in California.
The exorbitant prices seen in Malibu reflect the broader economic disparity in California, the wealthiest and most populous state in the United States. While the region attracts significant wealth, it also grapples with a severe housing shortage that drives property values far above the national average. In Southern California alone, homes now sell for nearly $900,000 on average, highlighting the stark contrast between the affluent and those struggling to afford housing in the state.
