The BYU Cougars showed their fighting spirit on Tuesday night in Provo, Utah, as they came from behind to defeat the Delaware Blue Hens 85-68. After a shaky first half, the seventh-ranked Cougars used a powerful second-half surge to remain unbeaten this season. Robert Wright III and Richie Saunders were the stars of the night, both scoring 26 points to lead BYU to their third straight win.
Robert Wright III delivered an almost triple-double performance with 26 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. He was in full control of the game in the second half, setting the pace and creating opportunities for his teammates. Richie Saunders also impressed the home crowd with his all-around play. He scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, making six successful 3-pointers that turned the game around for BYU.
Another key performer for BYU was AJ Dybantsa, who scored 18 points and secured seven rebounds. His presence under the basket helped the Cougars dominate the boards. Dybantsa’s energy was vital in the second half when BYU went on several scoring runs that broke Delaware’s defense. His back-to-back dunks midway through the second half fired up the crowd and gave the Cougars the momentum they needed to pull away.
The Cougars showed their physical advantage by outrebounding Delaware 46-25. This difference played a major role in the victory. BYU’s ability to collect 19 offensive rebounds created extra scoring opportunities, and the team turned those into 23 crucial points. These second-chance points made it difficult for Delaware to maintain their early lead once BYU found their shooting rhythm.
The Delaware Blue Hens began the game in fine form, surprising BYU by taking an early 17-4 lead in the first six minutes. Christian Bliss and Macon Emory each scored 18 points and helped Delaware control the first half. Their early energy and fast-paced offense caught BYU off guard. However, the Blue Hens couldn’t maintain the same intensity after halftime as BYU’s improved shooting and rebounding took over.
BYU faced major shooting problems in the first half. They missed their first 11 attempts from beyond the arc and went just 1-for-12 from three-point range before halftime. Wright’s late three-pointer with under three minutes remaining in the first half was the only success from distance before the break. Despite this, BYU kept the score close, trailing only 37-34 at halftime.
The second half was a completely different story. BYU found their rhythm from long range, hitting 11 of their 20 three-point attempts. Wright and Saunders sparked the turnaround with back-to-back threes that gave BYU its first lead at 51-48. From that point, the Cougars never looked back. Their fast ball movement and improved defense allowed them to outscore Delaware 51-31 in the second half.
Richie Saunders caught fire from deep, making three straight 3-pointers during a key 20-5 run that gave BYU a 73-57 lead with just over seven minutes left. His confident shooting and timely rebounds crushed Delaware’s hopes of a comeback. The Blue Hens were unable to find an answer to BYU’s aggressive play and superior energy in the final minutes.
With this win, BYU improved to 3-0 for the season and once again showed why they are considered one of the top teams in college basketball. Their ability to recover from a slow start and dominate in the second half highlighted the team’s depth and determination. Delaware, now 0-3, will look to rebuild their confidence as they continue their early-season schedule.
