Jerry Adler, a man whose life was filled with stories, theatre lights, and unforgettable television moments, has passed away at the age of 96. His family shared the sad news on Saturday, with Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York confirming the actor’s peaceful passing in his sleep. Adler’s longtime talent agency, Paradigm Talent Agency, also shared the news through Sarah Shulman on behalf of the family. No specific cause of death was announced.

For many people, Jerry Adler will forever be remembered as Hesh Rabkin, the trusted adviser to mob boss Tony Soprano in the legendary HBO series The Sopranos. Others knew him as Howard Lyman on the hit legal drama The Good Wife. But Jerry Adler’s career was not limited to acting. In fact, he spent decades behind the stage lights before ever stepping in front of the camera. His life is an inspiring story of determination, adaptability, and love for the performing arts.

A Family Deeply Rooted In Theatre

Adler was born into a family that was connected to Jewish and Yiddish theatre. His father, Philip Adler, worked as a general manager for Broadway productions and was also linked to the famous Group Theatre. His cousin, Stella Adler, went on to become one of the most respected acting teachers in American theatre history. This strong connection to the world of acting and stage performances meant that Jerry grew up surrounded by stories, rehearsals, and talented people.

Even though he once thought he was “too goofy-looking” to be an actor, Adler always remained close to theatre. His early career was spent backstage, where he became a stage manager, producer, and later, a director.

Building Broadway’s Golden Years

Jerry Adler worked on 53 Broadway productions throughout his stage career. His work included some of the most iconic shows in theatre history. Among them was the original production of My Fair Lady, which is still remembered as one of the most successful musicals of all time.

Working on Broadway during the mid-20th century meant collaborating with legends. Adler worked alongside stars like Marlene Dietrich, Julie Andrews, and Richard Burton. These were not only actors but cultural icons whose performances shaped the history of modern theatre.

Adler’s role behind the curtain was crucial. A stage manager or producer may not be the person receiving applause at the end of a show, but without their guidance and leadership, productions would struggle to succeed. Adler’s organizational skills, artistic eye, and ability to work with both creative and technical teams made him one of the most reliable names on Broadway.

The Changing Times Of Broadway

By the 1980s, Broadway began to face challenges. The industry was going through a slump, and productions were not thriving the way they once had. For Adler, this meant rethinking his future. Instead of giving up, he turned to another form of entertainment—television.

He began working behind the scenes in television productions such as the soap opera Santa Barbara. This shift showed his ability to adapt to changing times. It also set the stage—quite literally—for what would become his second career: acting.

The Unexpected Journey To Acting

Jerry Adler’s move to acting came almost by chance. In 1992, casting director Donna Isaacson, who happened to be a friend of one of Adler’s daughters, thought of him for a role in the film The Public Eye. Director Howard Franklin had already auditioned many actors but felt something was missing. When Adler read for the role, Franklin reportedly felt chills. That performance opened the door to a brand-new career for Adler, who was already in his 60s at the time.

This was a turning point. What began as a “let’s see what happens” moment transformed Adler into a well-recognized actor with a screen career that lasted more than 30 years.

From Northern Exposure To The Sopranos

Adler’s first noticeable television work came when he appeared in David Chase’s Northern Exposure. This connection with Chase later led him to his most memorable role—Hesh Rabkin in The Sopranos.

In the series, Hesh was more than just a side character. He was a trusted advisor to Tony Soprano, someone who brought wisdom, calmness, and a unique presence to the intense world of organized crime. Adler’s natural ability to combine warmth with authority made the role unforgettable. He appeared throughout all six seasons of the show, making him a familiar face to millions of viewers worldwide.

A Prolific Television Career

Though The Sopranos gave him global fame, Adler’s career was filled with many other roles. He appeared in:

  • The Good Wife as Howard Lyman

  • Rescue Me

  • Mad About You

  • Transparent

  • The West Wing

  • Broad City

He also made appearances in films, including Woody Allen’s Manhattan Murder Mystery. His ability to adapt to both comedic and dramatic roles made him a versatile actor, even though he started this part of his career relatively late in life.

Returning To Broadway As A Performer

Even though he found success in television and film, Adler never completely left Broadway. In 2000, he returned to the stage as a performer in Elaine May’s Taller Than a Dwarf. Later, in 2015, he appeared in Larry David’s Fish in the Dark, which marked David’s stage debut. These performances showed that Adler’s heart always remained connected to the theatre, no matter how much success he found on-screen.

His Memoir: A Life In Stories

In 2024, Adler published his memoir titled Too Funny for Words: Backstage Tales from Broadway, Television and the Movies. In this book, he shared personal stories from his long career, giving readers an inside look at both the glamorous and the challenging sides of show business.

For someone who once believed he was not fit to be an actor, the memoir became a reflection of an extraordinary life that spanned both stage and screen.

Remembering Jerry Adler

Jerry Adler often said that it felt strange to see himself on screen or to be recognized by fans. But he also admitted there was a comfort in acting—the knowledge that his work and his image would be preserved forever.

From the bright lights of Broadway to the gritty streets of The Sopranos, Adler’s journey was anything but ordinary. He proved that talent can shine at any age and that one can start a successful acting career even after 60.

At 96, Jerry Adler leaves behind a rich legacy, not only in the productions he worked on but also in the memories of those who watched him perform. His life is a reminder that passion and perseverance can carry us through every stage of life, opening doors when we least expect them.
