Bowen Yang is poised to exit Saturday Night Live during the ongoing season, marking a significant milestone in his decorated tenure with the iconic NBC sketch comedy show. His departure signals a pivotal moment for the series, where Yang has emerged as one of the most impactful and recognizable figures in recent history.

As reported by Variety, Yang’s concluding episode will air this Saturday, featuring pop sensation Ariana Grande as host, who is also his co-star from the anticipated film Wicked. The legendary Cher is set to perform as the musical guest, making this a memorable send-off for the beloved comedian.

Yang, who joined Saturday Night Live in September 2018 initially as a writer for Season 44, quickly made his mark with his exceptional wit and unique perspective. He transitioned to an on-screen role in Season 45 just a year later, swiftly becoming one of the most acclaimed and discussed performers known for his vibrant characters and astute political and cultural commentary.

Earlier this year, Yang hinted at his potential departure from SNL during a conversation with People magazine in April. He reflected on the show’s dynamic nature, noting that while it continually invites new talent, seasoned cast members ultimately need to make space for others. Although he was uncertain about his exit timeframe, his remarks suggested that the decision was likely forthcoming.

Over the course of his stint on Saturday Night Live, Yang garnered significant acclaim, earning Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025, underscoring his lasting impact on the show. He also received a nomination in 2019 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, showcasing his dual contributions as both performer and writer.

Yang is joining an exclusive group of cast members to leave SNL mid-season. Actress Cecily Strong’s departure in December 2022 during Season 48 marked another significant change. His exit coincides with substantial cast changes announced earlier this year.

Other performers, including Devon Walker, who recently revealed his exit post-three seasons on Instagram, alongside Ego Nwodim, Emil Wakim, Michael Longfellow, and Heidi Gardner, have also confirmed their departures.

Bowen Yang’s departure signifies the conclusion of an era for Saturday Night Live. As fans gear up for his final performance this weekend, many are reflecting on his lasting influence and contributions that have reshaped the comedy landscape of SNL.
