Voting was temporarily halted at five polling locations in DeKalb County, Georgia, after bomb threats were made, which are suspected to have originated from Russia. The affected polling places include a church, two libraries, a community center, and a senior center. Additional bomb threats were also directed at two non-polling locations in the area, raising further concerns about the security of the election process.

DeKalb County officials confirmed that law enforcement authorities are conducting extensive bomb sweeps at the affected sites to ensure voter safety. Michael Thurmond, the CEO of DeKalb County, assured the public that every available resource would be deployed to allow citizens to vote once the situation was deemed safe. He emphasized the county's commitment to ensuring that all voters could cast their ballots without hindrance.

Keisha Smith, the Executive Director of DeKalb's Voter Registration and Elections, explained that the suspension of voting was a precautionary measure. Voting was paused temporarily until authorities could ensure the safety of the polling stations. In response to the disruption, DeKalb County has sought an emergency order to extend voting hours at the affected locations to allow voters extra time to cast their ballots.

The bomb threats, which are believed to have originated from Russian email domains, are part of a broader pattern of election-related disruptions in Georgia, according to state officials. While the threats have been considered non-credible by experts, their timing has raised concerns about possible foreign interference in the election. A senior Georgia Democrat acknowledged these concerns and stated that efforts were being made to reassure voters, urging those deterred by the threat to return to the polls once the all-clear was given.

Despite these allegations, the Russian embassy in Washington has denied any involvement in the bomb threats, calling the accusations "malicious slander" through a statement to RIA, a Russian news agency. The situation remains under investigation as authorities work to address the threats and ensure the safety and integrity of the election process.
