The U.S. Air Force has announced another delay concerning the delivery of new Air Force One jets, now set for mid-2028. This setback extends the timeline for the presidential aircraft that Boeing is constructing.

President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to utilize these jets before his term concludes in January 2029, but the new schedule could limit his ability to do so.

This Air Force One initiative aims to transform two Boeing 747-8 aircraft into customized jets intended for presidential travel, equipped with the latest communication, security, and defensive technologies for safe global operations.

The current fleet is aging, having been in operation since 1990, necessitating updates to meet contemporary security and technology standards.

Initially valued at $3.9 billion when awarded in 2018, the cost of the new Air Force One program has surged to over $5 billion, with Boeing already facing $2.4 billion in charges tied to the delays and rising costs.

Boeing assures that it is making progress and is committed to fulfilling the project requirements, despite the complexities involved in adhering to stringent government and military standards.

In the meantime, the U.S. government accepted a luxury Boeing 747 from Qatar, with requests to modify it for temporary use as Air Force One. Defense contractor L3Harris Technologies is responsible for these upgrades.

While President Trump has openly criticized Boeing for the setbacks, he has ruled out alternatives from Airbus. However, Boeing executives have noted that Elon Musk is providing assistance in ensuring timely delivery.

To enhance project management, Steve Sullivan was appointed in June to lead the Air Force One team, following his experience with significant defense projects at Northrop Grumman.

This delay underscores the hurdles linked to large-scale government aviation endeavors, where security and technical complexities frequently result in increased expenses and extended schedules. For now, the U.S. will continue relying on the current Air Force One jets while awaiting their replacements.
