Bangladesh has introduced new police uniforms in an effort to rebuild public confidence after last year’s political unrest that led to major loss of life and widespread criticism of law enforcement. The uniforms were officially revealed in Dhaka just weeks before the country heads toward national elections.
What Happened
The police force, which previously wore turquoise-and-blue uniforms, will now switch to iron-grey shirts and chocolate-brown trousers. Officials say this change is meant to represent a new beginning for the police institution, which has been struggling with a severe credibility crisis.
Why It Happened
The unrest last year led to the fall of the previous government led by Sheikh Hasina. During the nationwide protests, at least 1,400 people were killed and thousands were injured. Many of these deaths were linked to police gunfire and excessive force. Public anger and distrust toward the police grew sharply as a result.
The mass protests gained momentum when Sheikh Hasina ordered security forces to crush the demonstrations, but the army refused to carry out the order. She has since been sentenced to death by a court in Dhaka on charges that include directing the use of deadly violence against protesters.
Police Response
Law enforcement authorities admit the crisis has deeply damaged public trust. A police spokesperson said leaders suggested that switching uniforms might help signal professional and cultural reform within the force.
However, whether this change in appearance can repair community relationships remains uncertain. Many families who lost loved ones during the uprising say their pain and anger run too deep.
Voices of the People
Many survivors and family members say a uniform alone cannot erase what happened. One grieving mother whose 17-year-old son was shot and died after being denied medical treatment said she cannot imagine trusting the police again. Others have voiced similar concerns, saying meaningful reform must involve accountability — not just cosmetic changes.
Ongoing Legal Action
Investigations into police actions are ongoing. Around 1,500 police officers currently face criminal charges, most of them related to murder. Several officers, including the former police chief, have already been sentenced following court proceedings.
Bangladesh is preparing for elections expected in February. Ensuring safety and calm during the voting process will be crucial, and the police role will be closely watched both nationally and internationally.
