Nepal is experiencing a significant political transformation as a former rapper and current mayor steps up to vie for the nation's highest office. Balendra Shah, known as Balen, has declared his candidacy for prime minister in the impending March 5 parliamentary elections. His announcement follows a wave of youth protests that have challenged the status quo and compelled established political figures to reconsider their positions.
At just 35, Balen is the mayor of Kathmandu and has emerged as a prominent figure among Nepal’s youth. Before delving into politics, he gained fame through his rap music, often critiquing societal issues with compelling lyrics. His rise in the political arena signifies a growing discontent among voters, particularly young individuals, toward traditional political parties that have dominated Nepal for over thirty years.
In preparation for the elections, Balen has allied with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), a newer political entity headed by Rabi Lamichhane, a former TV host turned politician. Their agreement stipulates that Balen will assume the prime minister role if the RSP secures victory, while Lamichhane will continue as party leader. Political observers note that this partnership merges youthful charisma with a structured political agenda.
This alliance arises in the wake of impactful “Gen Z” protests in September, where young demonstrators across Nepal rallied against corruption, ineffective governance, and insufficient job prospects. Some protests escalated into violence, resulting in 77 fatalities and eventually leading to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. This unrest signifies one of Nepal's most critical political crises in recent times.
Though Balen didn't frequently attend protest gatherings, many youth activists viewed him as a figure of resistance. He effectively utilized social media to reach his supporters and later played a part in the formation of an interim government led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, responsible for overseeing the electoral process.
With nearly 19 million eligible voters from a population of about 30 million, the political landscape has shifted significantly post-protests, adding almost one million new young voters to the rolls. This surge has turned youth voters into a critical force in the forthcoming election, posing new challenges for the established political parties.
For years, the political landscape of Nepal has been dominated by the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (UML). Leaders of these parties have dismissed the influence of the new alliance, labeling Balen and Lamichhane as controversial figures. They maintain that experience and stability will outweigh popularity as voters head to the polls.
Conversely, supporters of the alliance argue that Nepal requires leaders who resonate with the ambitions and frustrations of the younger generation. They advocate for fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to break the persistent cycle of corruption and ineffective governance that has impeded the nation’s progress.
Even with uncertainties surrounding Balen’s leadership approach and Lamichhane's legal woes, their coalition has already influenced the political narrative. The March elections will determine if Nepal's electorate is ready to embrace a new leadership paradigm or revert to the established political hierarchy.
What stands clear is that Nepal's youth are no longer passive. Through protests, voting, and active political engagement, they are shaping the nation's future in unprecedented ways.
