Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of Frontier25 and The Climate Tribe, met Professor Eric Xing, President of Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), to explore cooperation on using artificial intelligence for climate action.
The meeting focused on translating AI research into real climate impact and discussed the latest developments in sustainability, climate science, and artificial intelligence.
They also talked about K2 Think, an open-source AI reasoning system launched by MBZUAI and G42 in September. The system is considered on par with leading global AI models and is seen as a major step forward for AI development in the UAE.
MBZUAI has recently launched several climate-focused initiatives. These include a new weather forecasting training programme with the University of Chicago to help governments provide localised weather predictions for agriculture and farmers. The university is also a founding knowledge partner of the United Nations Development Programme’s AI for Sustainable Development Platform (AI4SDP), launched after COP28.
In October, Sheikha Shamma hosted World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders during the From Heritage to Horizon programme, which included sessions at MBZUAI on how AI can help build a sustainable future.
Sheikha Shamma said that AI is transforming how people understand the planet and develop solutions to protect it. She stressed that the knowledge and technology being developed at MBZUAI must be used to benefit the world and strengthen climate action.
