Abu Dhabi is getting ready to welcome the world’s best jiu-jitsu fighters once again. The 17th Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship will take place from 12th to 22nd November 2025 at the famous Mubadala Arena. This event is one of the most important gatherings for the sport and will bring together athletes from all corners of the globe.

The organisers have announced that this year’s championship will have a prize pool of AED 3 million. This huge prize fund shows how much the event has grown and how it has become the most prestigious jiu-jitsu competition in the world.

The championship is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council. His continuous support has helped the championship expand year after year, making Abu Dhabi a true home for the sport.

A Look Back: From 2009 to Today

When the championship first began in 2009, it welcomed around 500 athletes from 50 countries. Back then, it was a new idea and not many could have imagined how big it would grow. Over the years, more and more athletes started joining, making the event stronger and more popular.

By 2023, at the 16th edition, the championship had over 8,000 athletes from across all continents. This steady growth shows the love that players and fans alike have for the event. Now, in 2025, the organisers expect more than 10,000 athletes, which will be a record number in the history of the championship.

A Celebration of Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone

This year’s edition is planned to be an 11-day festival of jiu-jitsu, where people of all ages and levels will get their chance to shine on the mat.

Here’s how the schedule looks:

  • 12th November: Amateur competitions kick off the event.

  • 13th – 15th November: Matches for the kids’ categories.

  • 13th November: Para-Jiu-Jitsu athletes compete.

  • 16th – 17th November: Youth competitions take place.

  • 18th – 19th November: Masters’ categories are held.

  • 20th – 22nd November: The championship ends with the professional competitions, where the top fighters in the world will battle for the grand titles.

This schedule makes sure that every group—kids, youth, amateurs, professionals, para-athletes, and masters—gets their moment in the spotlight.

Prize Money and Motivation

The AED 3 million prize money is not just about rewarding winners. According to Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Chairman of the Championship Organising Committee, the money is also meant to motivate athletes to give their best performances.

He said: “Announcing AED 3 million in prize money for the 17th edition shows our commitment to making this championship a global stage for the sport. We want athletes to feel motivated to perform at their best and to give the fans matches they will never forget.”

He also added that the organising team is preparing an extraordinary event that will meet the highest international standards, thanks to the full support of the UAE’s leadership.

Abu Dhabi: The World Capital of Jiu-Jitsu

Abu Dhabi has worked hard over the years to become the world capital of jiu-jitsu. By hosting this championship every year, the city has become the heart of the sport.

The championship is not only about matches. It is about culture, respect, and bringing people together through the values of sportsmanship. More than 10,000 athletes from around the world will gather in Abu Dhabi this year, making it a place where cultures meet and friendships are built.

This is one of the reasons why jiu-jitsu fans everywhere look forward to the Abu Dhabi championship—it is not just a competition but a celebration of the sport itself.

Preparations for a Record-Breaking Year

With the record number of athletes expected, the Organising Committee has been working tirelessly. Their focus is on ensuring everything runs smoothly—from the arrival of athletes at the airport to their matches inside the arena.

Key partners like Abu Dhabi Police, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, and the Ministry of Interior are all playing a part in making the event successful.

Special care is being given to:

  • Infrastructure readiness at Mubadala Arena

  • Smooth arrival procedures for athletes and teams

  • Volunteer training to assist fans and participants

  • Medical teams to ensure health and safety

  • Security teams to keep everything safe and organised

Every detail is being looked at closely, so that the experience for athletes and fans is truly world-class.

More Than Just Matches

The championship is about much more than just winning medals and titles. It is about creating memories, sharing experiences, and teaching values like discipline, respect, and resilience.

Children get to see their role models compete, youth participants gain valuable experience, and professionals get to show their skills at the highest stage. Families, fans, and tourists will also have the chance to enjoy an unforgettable sporting event in one of the most modern cities in the world.

The 17th edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship is expected to be the biggest and most exciting yet. With the largest prize money in its history, a record number of athletes, and 11 days of action-packed matches, it promises to leave a lasting mark on the sport.

The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and the Organising Committee are confident that this year will not only strengthen Abu Dhabi’s place as the capital of jiu-jitsu but also inspire a new generation of athletes.

As the championship draws nearer, excitement is building among athletes, coaches, and fans. November 2025 will not only be a month of competition but also a celebration of how far the sport of jiu-jitsu has come since the first edition back in 2009.

Abu Dhabi once again stands ready to welcome the world, proving that with hard work, vision, and unity, it can host an event that inspires, motivates, and brings people together through the spirit of sport.
