In a sweeping international operation, authorities have dismantled a massive online fraud and money-laundering network that spanned continents and defrauded millions. German investigators confirmed that 18 suspects were arrested following coordinated raids across ten countries, including Germany, Italy, the United States, and Singapore.
The investigation revealed that between 2016 and 2021, the network stole credit card details of more than 4.3 million people from 193 nations. Using this data, the suspects created fake websites that appeared to offer streaming, dating, and entertainment services. Victims were unknowingly charged through fraudulent subscriptions, generating illicit profits estimated at over €300 million (about S$450 million).
According to Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, the group infiltrated four major payment service providers in Germany to move their stolen funds. While officials did not disclose the names of the companies, they said the suspects had exploited payment systems to disguise illegal transactions as legitimate purchases.
Late on November 4, police teams carried out simultaneous searches in multiple countries — Germany, Luxembourg, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Italy, Singapore, and the United States. The coordinated action reflects one of the most extensive global efforts against digital financial crime in recent years.
Authorities say the crackdown marks a significant step toward tackling cross-border cybercrime networks that continue to evolve with sophisticated online tools. The investigation remains ongoing, with further arrests and asset seizures expected in the coming weeks.
