Wayanad, Kerala – A catastrophic landslide in the Meppadi area of Kerala's Wayanad district has resulted in at least 84 confirmed fatalities as of Tuesday. Kerala Chief Secretary Dr. V.Venu described the situation as “very grave,” noting that the isolated location of the disaster site, combined with adverse weather conditions and challenging terrain, has severely hampered rescue and relief operations.
Fatalities and Missing Persons: Dr. V.Venu confirmed that over 70 bodies have been recovered and taken to hospitals. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are found and additional reports come in. “We have news that more people are missing, and the casualty number may go up,” Venu said.
Challenges in Rescue Operations: The rescue teams are struggling to access the affected areas due to the isolation of the disaster site. Efforts are being hampered by a collapsed bridge and strong water currents, making it difficult to reach stranded individuals. “One small team has managed to cross the river, but more resources are needed to provide assistance on the far side,” Venu explained.

Weather Conditions: The rescue operations are further complicated by the Red Rain Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The alert has grounded helicopters, which were initially intended for air rescue and material drops. “Air operations have been postponed due to the Red Alert,” Venu said.
Surface Rescue Efforts: With air operations suspended, the primary focus has shifted to surface rescue efforts. However, the strong water currents and the collapsed infrastructure are making this approach difficult.
Military and National Response: The Indian Army has been called in to assist with the rescue operations, and additional support is being coordinated. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed three teams to Wayanad and is also assisting in the nearby Kozhikode district, where a landslide was suspected.
Relief Camps Established: Authorities have set up three relief camps in Wayanad to provide immediate aid to affected residents. Kerala Forest Minister Saseendran has arrived in the area to assess the damage and coordinate the response efforts.
State and National Support: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has been in communication with top officials from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) to oversee the response. In addition, the Indian Air Force has deployed two helicopters, a Mi-17 and an ALH Dhruv, to assist with rescue and relief operations.
Regional Cooperation: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reached out to Pinarayi Vijayan, offering full support from Tamil Nadu in the ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
This disaster has underscored the urgent need for coordinated efforts and robust response mechanisms to address the immediate challenges posed by natural calamities in remote and difficult-to-access regions.
