US Approves Plan to Sell F-35 Jets to Saudi Arabia Amid Tech Concerns

The United States has agreed in principle to sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, marking a significant development in the defence partnership between Washington and Riyadh. The decision was confirmed by President Donald Trump, who described Saudi Arabia as a “great ally” while speaking at the White House on Monday. The move is seen as an important diplomatic gesture ahead of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Washington.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the F-35 aircraft — considered one of the world’s most advanced stealth fighter jets — has long been sought by Saudi Arabia. Each aircraft is valued at around $100 million. However, the sale remains in its early stages and may face several hurdles similar to past arms negotiations in the region.

What Happened, When and Where

The announcement came on Monday during a White House media interaction, where President Trump confirmed the US intention to sell F-35 jets to Saudi Arabia. The discussions form part of a broader diplomatic effort aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries, and potentially encouraging Riyadh to move toward diplomatic engagement with Israel.

Key Statements and International Reactions

President Trump’s confirmation represents an initial political approval rather than a finalized agreement. Formal processes such as congressional clearance, Pentagon review, and contract negotiations with the aircraft’s manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, are still required.

However, the potential sale has already triggered concern from multiple stakeholders:

  • Israeli government officials have expressed caution, as Israel currently remains the only Middle Eastern country equipped with the F-35. Under US law, Israel must maintain a “qualitative military edge” in the region.

  • A Pentagon report raised alarms about the possibility of China gaining access to sensitive technology through Saudi Arabia, given Beijing’s defence and technology cooperation with Riyadh.

Foreign policy experts warn that the transfer of such sensitive technology could create long-term challenges for US strategic security interests in the region.

Comparison With Earlier F-35 Deals

A previous case involving the United Arab Emirates demonstrates the complexities ahead. The UAE received approval to purchase up to 50 F-35 jets during Trump’s earlier term, but delivery stalled due to US concerns over China-linked technologies in UAE telecommunications infrastructure, particularly Huawei equipment. Those negotiations eventually paused under the Biden administration.

Analysts suggest that similar technology-security issues could arise during Saudi Arabia’s procurement process.

What Happens Next

For the sale to progress:

  1. Saudi Arabia must submit a formal request for the aircraft.

  2. Congress must approve the transfer, following assessment of regional military balance.

  3. The Pentagon must issue a Letter of Offer and Acceptance.

  4. Saudi Arabia and Lockheed Martin would then negotiate technical, financial and delivery terms.

Even after approval, delivery could take several years due to production schedules and competing international orders. Lockheed Martin currently has over 1,100 F-35 jets on order for global partners.

Geoeconomics specialists say the agreement could strengthen Saudi-US ties and support Riyadh’s broader strategic ambitions. Analysts note that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman seeks advanced defence cooperation, technology partnerships, and support for Saudi Arabia’s growing nuclear programme.

While the country may not receive all the commitments it desires, experts believe the US decision positions Saudi Arabia for deeper cooperation in defence, technology, and regional diplomacy.
