Australia has received a boost ahead of the first Ashes Test in Perth starting Friday, with all-rounder Cameron Green confirming he is ready to bowl without any restrictions. The 26-year-old had been sidelined due to a side strain last month, following a serious back injury in 2024 that prevented him from bowling at the Test level. Green’s return comes at a crucial time as Australia reels from injuries to captain Pat Cummins and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood.

Speaking at an Ashes launch event at Perth Stadium on Tuesday, Green said, “I feel really good. It’s been a really slow buildup. Probably would prefer a few more competitive overs, but at the same time, it’s a double-edged sword. There are no restrictions, and when you get into Test cricket, there’s no need for restrictions. We’ll just see how the game goes, and I’m happy to put my hand up whenever.”

Standing 198 centimeters tall, Green is expected to secure the all-rounder spot over Beau Webster after scoring a neat 94 in his most recent Sheffield Shield match at the WACA. While he has yet to receive confirmation about his batting position, he expressed flexibility, noting that he has played most of his Test cricket at number six but is also comfortable higher up the order. His career-high score of 174 not out against New Zealand at number four demonstrates his adaptability.

“The people in charge I think met last night, so I’ll probably get told later today. Whichever way they go, I think we’ve got a really great squad and a lot of great combinations to go with,” Green said. He added that he is grateful for the team’s trust in his ability to perform in multiple positions.

Selectors face a key decision on whether to include a specialist opener to partner Usman Khawaja or use a makeshift option such as Marnus Labuschagne, who has already scored five domestic centuries this season. The final lineup will also determine how Australia balances its batting and bowling options against an attacking England side.

Green acknowledged England’s aggressive approach, popularly called ‘Bazball’ after coach Brendon McCullum. “We’ve never seen it played in Australia. What can happen with being really attacking is that you can bring the other team into the game, but you’re also putting pressure back on them. It’s a cool brand of cricket that they’re playing, we’ll wait and see what happens,” he said.

The upcoming series is highly anticipated, as England last won the Ashes in Australia in 2015, and Australia is eager to defend home advantage. Green’s fitness and readiness to contribute with both bat and ball will be key factors for Australia’s strategy in the five-match series. His return provides reassurance to the team and fans alike, highlighting the depth and resilience of the Australian squad ahead of the opening Test in Perth.
