Free-agent first baseman Josh Naylor has officially returned to the Seattle Mariners, signing a five-year contract worth $92.5 million. The deal, confirmed by ESPN's Jeff Passan, includes a no-trade clause and no deferred payments. Naylor’s signing marks the first major free-agent acquisition of the MLB offseason.

Naylor, 28, had an impressive season with the Mariners after being traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline. His arrival helped Seattle reach the American League Championship Series (ALCS), where they came within one win of advancing to the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

During his 54 regular-season games with Seattle, Naylor slashed .299/.341/.490, hitting nine home runs, driving in 33 runs, and stealing 19 bases. His performance in the postseason was even stronger. In 12 playoff games, he batted .340/.392/.574 with three home runs, five RBIs, and two stolen bases, establishing himself as one of the team’s key players.

Naylor’s success and versatility made him a fan favorite. By the end of the postseason, he had moved into the top four of Seattle’s batting lineup and became a central part of the team’s offensive strategy. His return on a long-term contract gives the Mariners stability at first base and strengthens their lineup as they aim to contend for the playoffs again next season.

This signing also signals Seattle’s intent to keep building around its young core and continue the momentum from their strong 2025 season. Naylor’s combination of power, speed, and postseason experience is expected to be a major asset for the Mariners, both on the field and in the clubhouse.

The Mariners’ fan base has warmly welcomed the news of Naylor’s return, excited to see him continue his career in Seattle. Analysts note that Naylor’s presence gives Seattle a strong foundation at first base, while also allowing the team to plan for long-term success and maintain competitiveness in the American League.

As the MLB offseason continues, Naylor’s signing is likely to be the benchmark for other free-agent deals. The Mariners have shown they are willing to invest in key players who can help them achieve their championship goals. With Naylor back in the fold, Seattle fans have plenty of reason to be optimistic about the team’s prospects in the upcoming season.
