The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for a major moment this week, as star player LeBron James is expected to return to the court for the first time this season. After missing the opening month due to sciatica, LeBron could make his comeback as early as Tuesday when the Lakers host the Utah Jazz. His return is still not confirmed, but head coach JJ Redick has said that the team will make the final decision based on how LeBron feels before the game.
LeBron has been recovering since the preseason, which caused him to miss the season opener for the first time in his long career. Last week, he practiced with the Lakers’ G League team to slowly build up rhythm and strength. On Monday, he practiced with the main NBA team for the first time this year. If he steps on the court, the 40-year-old superstar will make history by becoming the first NBA player ever to compete in 23 consecutive seasons.
Teammates are excited about the possibility of having LeBron back. Guard Austin Reaves shared how much the team will benefit from his presence. He said LeBron has always been a winner and one of the best players in the league. Reaves believes that even after the long break, LeBron will still play at an elite level and help the team improve further.
Even without LeBron, the Lakers have played surprisingly well. Luka Doncic has been the team’s biggest scorer, averaging an impressive 34.4 points per game. Austin Reaves has also stepped up, scoring 28.3 points on average. New center Deandre Ayton has added 16.2 points and 8.4 rebounds, giving the Lakers a solid inside presence.
The Lakers’ recent performances have been strong. Their most recent win was a 119-95 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on the road. In that game, Doncic scored 41 points, Reaves added 25 with eight assists, and Ayton contributed 20 points with 10 rebounds. Coach Redick praised Doncic and Reaves for their leadership and their consistent ability to carry the team through tough games.
While the Lakers are getting stronger, the Utah Jazz are also performing well on offense. The Jazz have won two of their last three games, scoring more than 150 points in both victories. Their latest win came in a double-overtime thriller against the Chicago Bulls, where Utah won 150-147.
The Jazz have shown strong scoring ability since the start of the season. They scored at least 129 points in three of their first four games and recently posted a season-best 152 points in a win over the Indiana Pacers.
Lauri Markkanen has been the Jazz’s leading star, scoring 47 points in the win against Chicago. His season average has now risen to a career-high 30.6 points per game. Guard Keyonte George scored 33 points in the same game, while Jusuf Nurkic grabbed 14 rebounds. The Jazz also showed strong resilience, coming back from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit and a 15-point gap in the third quarter.
George sealed the win with a clutch 3-pointer with just two seconds left in the second overtime. Markkanen later said that although the Jazz wished they had won earlier, playing in such competitive and exciting games is always enjoyable.
The upcoming game will be the first of two meetings this week between the Lakers and the Jazz. They will face each other again on Sunday in Utah. With LeBron’s possible return and Utah’s high-scoring form, both games are expected to be intense and entertaining.
