A man who grabbed pop star Ariana Grande on the red carpet in Singapore has been sentenced to jail, following a shocking incident at the Asia premiere of Wicked: For Good.
Johnson Wen, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of being a public nuisance and was sentenced to nine days in jail. The court highlighted the premeditated nature of his actions and a history of similar behavior at celebrity events.
Court Statement Highlights Pattern of Attention-Seeking Behavior
Singapore District Judge Christopher Goh addressed Wen directly in court, saying, “You seem to be attention-seeking, thinking only of yourself and not the safety of others when committing these acts.” He also emphasized that Wen’s repeated behavior suggested he could act similarly in the future if not corrected.
The judge added, “You were wrong to assume that your actions would not have any consequences. You should be mindful that there are always consequences for one's actions.”
Following the sentence, Wen assured the court that he “won’t do it again” and stated that he intended to stop getting into trouble.
The Incident at the Asia Premiere of Wicked: For Good
The incident occurred last week when Wen jumped over the barricade and rushed toward Ariana Grande, 32, as she walked the red carpet with her co-stars. He threw an arm around the singer before bouncing excitedly and waving to the crowd, startling both the star and the audience.
Security quickly intervened, and Wen was removed from the venue. The incident drew widespread attention on social media, sparking discussions about celebrity safety and the consequences of public disturbances.
This sentencing marks a clear message about accountability and the importance of respecting public and personal boundaries, especially at high-profile events.
