Airports across the United States faced mounting delays on Tuesday as the federal government shutdown stretched into its seventh day, highlighting the growing strain on air travel caused by staffing shortages.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported critical staffing issues at airports including Nashville, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia, while air traffic control centers in Atlanta and the Dallas-Fort Worth region were also affected. To maintain safety, the agency temporarily slowed takeoffs for flights headed to some of these cities.
Monday had already seen major delays at Burbank, California, Newark, New Jersey, and Denver, all linked to insufficient staffing during the shutdown, which began on October 1.

Travel analysts warn that the ongoing shutdown could disrupt millions of holiday travel plans if the impasse continues. Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry expert, said the risk of significant disruptions “is growing by the day” as essential federal workers continue without pay.
Air Traffic Controllers and TSA Officers Under Pressure
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that more air traffic controllers were calling in sick at certain locations, forcing the FAA to limit takeoffs and landings. At Hollywood Burbank Airport, the control tower was forced to shut down for several hours on Monday afternoon, causing delays averaging two-and-a-half hours.
Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, highlighted that many facilities are already understaffed and rely on outdated equipment. “A couple of controllers missing work can have a big impact at a small airport,” he said, pointing out that there aren’t enough trained personnel to fill gaps on short notice.
Similarly, TSA workers are grappling with unpaid bills and mounting financial pressure. Some have called in sick, though numbers have not yet caused widespread operational issues. Still, officials worry that the longer the shutdown continues, the greater the impact on federal employees’ ability to perform their duties.
Airports Step In to Support Workers
Several airports are stepping up to provide support for unpaid federal workers. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is offering $15 food vouchers and free parking in terminal lots, while Tampa International Airport has launched “Operation Bald Eagle 2,” providing food pantries, free bus rides, and assistance with utility bills.
These efforts aim to help essential workers continue performing their duties during the shutdown, ensuring that airport operations remain as smooth as possible despite the challenges.
Growing Concerns for Holiday Travel
With the government shutdown showing no signs of ending soon, industry experts and airport officials warn that the strain on air travel could intensify as holiday travel approaches. Passengers are advised to check their flights ahead of time and prepare for possible delays.
