Every year on October 8, marine enthusiasts across the globe celebrate World Octopus Day—a tribute to one of the ocean’s most intelligent and fascinating creatures. The octopus, known for its extraordinary camouflage, adaptability, and sharp memory, continues to amaze scientists and ocean lovers alike.
In Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea emerges as a living showcase of this marine marvel. Its unique waters, marked by high salinity and elevated temperatures, serve as a thriving habitat for several species of octopus, each playing a vital role in sustaining the marine ecosystem.
Recent research by Saudi marine teams has unveiled the Red Sea as a hidden treasure trove of octopus diversity. Across five field missions, scientists collected 87 marine samples from coral reefs and coastal areas along the western coast. The studies confirmed the presence of at least eight known species and three potential new species, highlighting the region’s exceptional ecological richness.

Among the remarkable residents of these waters is the diurnal octopus (Octopus cyanea), active during daylight hours, and the highly skilled camouflager Abdopus horridus, which can blend seamlessly into the reef environment. The findings suggest that the Red Sea accounts for 3.1% to 3.5% of the world’s documented octopus species diversity—a striking testament to its unique marine environment.
From shallow reefs at just two meters deep to the darker depths reaching 200 meters, octopuses in the Red Sea navigate a complex underwater landscape. Their presence is essential not only for maintaining ecological balance but also as an indicator of the health and sustainability of the marine environment.
Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving this underwater biodiversity aligns with Vision 2030, which emphasizes environmental conservation and sustainable resource management. Coordinated efforts by agencies, led by the Saudi Red Sea Authority, aim to ensure these extraordinary species continue to flourish for generations to come.
As World Octopus Day highlights these intelligent creatures, the Red Sea stands out as a beacon of marine life diversity—a reminder of the wonders still hidden beneath the waves.
