Karnataka Schools Closed Amid Extended Statewide Caste Survey

Karnataka government has announced that all government and aided schools across the state will remain closed from October 8 to October 18, 2025. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed that the move aims to allow teachers to actively participate in the ongoing caste survey, which was initially scheduled to conclude on October 7.

The survey has been extended due to uneven progress across districts. While Koppal has achieved nearly 97% completion, districts like Udupi and Dakshina Kannada lag behind with 63% and 60% completion rates, respectively. Officials stress that the goal is to achieve 100% coverage within the next ten days.

Tragically, three survey staff members lost their lives while on duty. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the families of each deceased worker. Teachers involved in mid-term examinations will not be assigned survey duties.

The survey process involves geo-tagging every household using electricity meter numbers and assigning a Unique Household ID (UHID). This initiative will create a comprehensive digital database of households in Karnataka, strengthening both governance and planning.

Residents’ ration card and Aadhaar details are being linked to their mobile numbers to ensure accurate records. A helpline (8050770004) has been established to assist households where no one is present during data collection. Citizens can also participate online or report complaints via the helpline.

With this extensive survey, Karnataka is aiming to map households digitally, ensure complete participation, and build a more efficient governance framework across the state.
