In a critical move, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau summoned Iraq’s Ambassador Nizar Khirullah to discuss urgent security concerns in Washington. This meeting comes on the heels of a troubling series of attacks targeting U.S. personnel and facilities within Iraq, attributed to Iran-backed militia groups operating in the region.

The U.S. expressed its dismay over a pattern of increasing violence, particularly highlighting an ambush from April 8 that targeted American diplomats in Baghdad. Reports suggest that these incidents form part of an alarming trend, with hundreds of attacks impacting U.S. citizens, diplomatic missions, and commercial activities. Neighboring countries and even local civilians, particularly in Kurdistan, have also felt the repercussions of this unrest.

During the dialogue, Deputy Secretary Landau recognized the efforts of Iraqi Security Forces in addressing some of these aggressive actions. However, he stressed serious worries regarding the Iraqi government’s failure to adequately counter these threats. He pointed out the precarious support enjoyed by these militia groups from elements within the Iraqi system, negatively affecting U.S.-Iraq relations.

Landau clearly conveyed that the United States will not stand idly by amid these continued attacks on its diplomats and interests. He urged the Iraqi leadership to take prompt and effective measures against Iran-aligned militias, emphasizing the urgent need for Iraq to assure the safety of diplomatic institutions and restore regional stability.

This meeting signals the intensifying strain in U.S.-Iraq relations as concerns about security and militia influence continue to hinder diplomatic efforts. The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its personnel while pressing Iraq to enhance cooperation in ensuring security across the region.
