Summer is a happy time for children. Schools are closed, days are longer, and kids love to play outside. But along with all this fun, summer also brings very strong heat—especially in cities like Dubai. This heat can make children feel tired, weak, and sometimes even sick if they do not drink enough water.
Many children get so busy playing that they forget to drink water. This is where parents need to be careful. Keeping children hydrated is not only about giving them water once or twice a day. It is about creating simple daily habits that help them stay fresh, active, and safe.
The good part is that you don’t need anything complicated. A few easy steps can make a big difference in your child’s health during the summer.
Children are more sensitive to heat than adults. Their bodies lose water faster, especially when they run, jump, and play outside. When they sweat, they lose important fluids. If they do not drink enough water, they can become dehydrated.
When children stay properly hydrated, they feel more energetic. They can focus better, play longer, and stay in a good mood. It also helps prevent common problems like headaches, weakness, and dizziness.
Simply put, water keeps their body working properly and helps them enjoy their day.
The easiest way to keep children hydrated is to remind them to drink water again and again. Do not wait until they say they are thirsty. By that time, their body already needs water.
Give them small amounts of water every 30 to 40 minutes, especially when they are playing. You can give them their own water bottle in their favorite color or design. This small trick can make them more interested in drinking water.
Some children do not like plain water. It may taste boring to them. You can solve this by adding natural flavors.
Put a few slices of lemon, orange, or some mint leaves in the water. You can also add small pieces of fruits like strawberries. This makes the water look colorful and taste better. Children are more likely to drink it without any complaints.
Water is not the only way to keep children hydrated. Many fruits and vegetables also contain a lot of water.
You can give them fruits like watermelon, oranges, and strawberries. Vegetables like cucumber are also a good option. These foods are light, refreshing, and full of nutrients. They help keep the body cool and hydrated at the same time.
Cold drinks and packaged juices may look tempting, especially in summer. But they are not a good choice for children.
These drinks have a lot of sugar, which can actually make children feel more thirsty. Instead, try giving them fresh fruit juice, coconut water, or homemade lemonade. These drinks are healthier and help the body stay cool.
Children learn quickly when things are done in a routine. Set fixed times for drinking water during the day.
For example, they can drink water after waking up, after meals, after playing, and before going to bed. When this becomes a habit, children will not need reminders again and again.
What children wear in summer also matters. Tight and heavy clothes can make them feel hotter and uncomfortable.
Dress them in light, loose, and cotton clothes. These clothes allow air to pass through and help reduce sweating. When children feel cool, they stay active and do not lose too much water.
In hot places like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the sun is very strong in the afternoon. The time between 12 PM and 4 PM is the hottest part of the day.
It is better to keep children indoors during these hours. Let them play outside in the early morning or evening when the weather is cooler and safer.
Parents should always keep an eye on their children for signs of dehydration.
If a child has dry lips, feels very tired, complains of a headache, or goes to the bathroom less often, it could mean they need more water. In such cases, give them fluids immediately and let them rest.
Children enjoy activities that feel like a game. You can make drinking water fun in simple ways.
Use colorful cups, fun straws, or create a small reward system. You can also make a daily chart and mark every time they drink water. These little ideas can encourage them without forcing them.
Children copy what they see. If parents drink water regularly, children will follow the same habit.
Try to drink water in front of them and talk about why it is important. When the whole family follows healthy habits, it becomes easier for children to learn.
Keeping children hydrated during summer is one of the most important things parents can do. It does not need big changes—just small daily efforts.
By giving water regularly, offering healthy drinks, choosing the right food, and avoiding too much heat, you can help your child stay safe and healthy.
Whether you live in Dubai or any other hot place, these simple steps can help your child stay cool, active, and happy throughout the summer.
